DT85 units produced before the production remedy was put into place are included in the recall. Production Dates : JAN 01, 2021 – APR 18, 2023 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : The Boom pressure limiter was incorrectly set above the design pressure, allowing the boom to lift loads above the rated capacity and over Hydraulic Overload Protection (HOP) setting. Lifting a load with the boom above the HOP setting can cause the HOP system to activate, preventing the load from being lowered by the boom. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : Lifting loads above unit capacity will overload the unit and could cause the unit to become unstable, increasing the risk of injury to personnel and others nearby. Description of the Cause : NR Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : The operator is responsible for knowing the weight of all loads before lifting. A boom raise capacity test should be completed if the operator is lifting an unknown load. During the test, the boom could lift a load and activate HOP indicating an issue with the system. The load indicator gauge and/or pressure gauge at the operator’s station will continue to operate properly. No other warning indicates an improper setting of the boom pressure limiter. Address : 2106 S Riverside Rd Saint Joseph Missouri 64507-2535 Country : United States Chronology : On April 11, 2023, a customer contacted Altec to discuss Digger Derrick stability testing. A Mobile Service Technician was dispatched to the unit and found that the pressure limiter setting and HOP were set incorrectly. The manufacturing plant investigated the issue and, on April 18, 2023, found that a checksheet for the pressure setting process for the DT85 unit was wrong. The recorded value on the checksheet was 2700 psi, and the correct value was 2450 psi. The production checksheet was updated. On April 24, 2023, an investigation was initiated to determine if units in the field could have an incorrect pressure limiter setting. After reviewing the investigation results on May 5, 2023, Altec determined that a defect could exist on certain DT85 digger derricks, and affected unit owners should be notified. There were no other warranty claims or field reports identified. There have been no accidents, injuries, or deaths related to this issue. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-340 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Altec will issue CSN 3078 to affected unit owners requiring them to test the boom lift pressure limiter setting and set it to the correct pressure. The recall remedy will be completed free of charge when the unit is presented for repair. The Altec Warranty Policy covers the recall remedy, including cases requiring reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of the problem associated with this recall. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The remedy will check and set the boom lift pressure limiter to the correct pressure. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The production checksheets were updated from 2700 psi to 2450 psi on April 18, 2023.
