This differs from vehicles that are welded to our standard specifications which were excluded from the recall population. We used an in-house developed computer program to determine which vehicles should be included in the recall based on part numbers and where used for a specific date range. Production Dates : FEB 21, 2023 – MAR 06, 2023 VIN Range 1 : Begin : 1JJV532D4RL381380 End : 1JJV281D8RL395361 ✔ Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : The king pin was not welded to our internal specifications. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : The missing weld may shorten the usable life of the component and cause premature failure by allowing the king pin to detach and move within the coupler assembly. Unintended motion of the king pin could increase the risk of a crash or injury. This condition has not been reported to Wabash by any of its customers. Description of the Cause : a computer program had the same start and stop points which omitted one weld from the robotic sequence. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : There is no indication that the condition is present. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-383 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Involved Components : Component Name 1 : Coupler Component Description : Upper Coupler Assembly Component Part Number : 03004047-07, 03004034-07 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : NR Address : NR NR Country : NR Chronology : 3/6/23, Noticed weld issue with robotic weld program on first shift. Removed suspect couplers from production. Edited and repaired computer program. Investigate last known change to computer program which was 2/21/23. Entered concern response to bring awareness to product safety team. 3/7/23, Safety team met, engineering determined this was not an immediate safety concern but should be addressed. 3/14/23, Safet Team determined to continue to investigate and meet with lead engineer. 3/16/23, Met with lead engineer. 3/28/23, Safety Team voted to discuss with outside counsel to determine what to escalate to the Safety committee. 3/29/23, Met with outside counsel, determined to escalate from a durability standpoint. 4/11/23, Safety team voted to escalate durability issue to the safety committee. 5/22/23, Safety committee voted to issue a voluntary safety recall. As of 5/22/23, Wabash knows of no warranty claims and no field or service reports related to this issue. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The upper coupler assembly will be replaced with one welded to our standards, under warranty, and at no cost to the owner. Customers will be reimbursed if they’ve incurred costs to obtain a remedy prior to receiving their notification for this condition. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The king pin is welded to our standard specifications which is indicated by heat marks that are visible from underneath the coupler assembly. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The condition was corrected on 3/6/2023 by editing the software used to control robotic welding.
