FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : Chafing of the alternator positive cable insulation may result in an increased risk of a fire. Description of the Cause : During the assembly process the positive alternator cable was routed too close to the left-hand front spring bracket top rearward fastener. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : There are no warnings associated with this defect. An investigation was initiated. 5/16/23 – Product Safety and Compliance requested a warranty claim search and all Field Service reports related to under hood fires. 5/25/23 – Seven warranty claims and six related under hood fires were reported. 6/6/2023 – The Peterbilt Safety Committee met and determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety does exist. As of 6/6/2023, Paccar received 7 warranty claims and 6 report(s) about trucks in the field that may be related between 9/27/2022 and 6/6/2023. No reports of deaths or injuries have been received. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Paccar will notify owners, and dealers will replace frame fastener and install it in the opposite direction along with properly securing the alternator cable free of charge. Owners who incurred costs to obtain a remedy for the problem addressed in the recall in advance of receiving notification may seek reimbursement through the process outlined in the general reimbursement plan on file. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The Denton plant implemented a procedure on 7/29/2022 to turn around the front of frame bracket fasteners on MLU Model 579 chassis. The fastener bolt/huck will protrude outboard thereby providing additional inside the rail cable routing clearance.
