The recalled axles were determined by the component manufacturer to have a defect with the grease zerk. Units not included in the recall were produced after the supplier made corrective actions. A total of 1366 Momentum & Reflection units from model year 2023 are affected. Lippert’s analysis determined that an improperly tightened grease zerk fitting may separate from the end of the axle spindle and lodge in a slot of the castle nut. This condition can interfere with the rotating dust cap which can potentially sheer the cotter pin, allowing the castle nut to back off the axle spindle which can result in a wheel hub failure. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : A wheel hub failure due to an improperly tightened grease zerk fitting can lead to a wheel coming off of the axle increasing the chance of injury or crash. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : Vibration, noise and excessive heat at the wheel end may occur. Grand Design reported axle related concern to Lippert Components. 5/18/23 – Grand Design received 5 more complaints regarding wheel off on 5200-6000 CURT axles. The incidents were reported to Lippert Components. 5/25/23 – Lippert team notified Grand Design of a request to inspect all axles on campus and in shipping yards. 5/26/23 – Lippert performs inspections. 6/15/23 – Lippert met with Grand Design RV to review information from their inspections. 6/23/23 – Grand Design notified of Safety Recall 23E-046. 6/28/23 – Grand Design Product Safety committee met and affirmed the field action. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Grand Design has received instructions for inspection and repair or replacement as needed of CURT axles which do not pass the inspection or have an occurrence. If repair or replacement is needed, Lippert will supply the necessary items to complete the repair or replace the faulty product. Owners that have paid to have this service performed will be reimbursed by Grand Design for any expenses incurred relating to the defect. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Per Lippert Components, the remedied components have been certified through the revised manufacturing process. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Per Lippert Components, on 5/29/2023, Lippert Components implemented a 1-piece flow process to ensure the zerk is tightened correctly during the installation step, and all operators retrained to the new process and audited on a regular basis. On 6/12/2023, to further improve the tightening process, Lippert Components identified a torque specification to discreetly identify the zerk is tightened properly. Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : Owners of affected will be notified by First Class mail that their vehicle is affected by this recall. In addition, we will post recall information electronically for consumer access. Dealers will be notified of the recall action (by First Class mail & electronically) and will be supplied with repair information and vehicle identification information.
