Grand Design RV
, LLC. (Grand Design) is recalling certain 2021-2024 Momentum and Solitude fifth wheels, equipped with certain CURT 7000 and 8000 lb axles. The U-bolts may have been improperly tightened, which can cause the axle to move out of position.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and tighten the U-bolts, as necessary. Any damaged components will be replaced. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 16, 2023. Owners may contact Grand Design customer service at 1-574-825-9679. Grand Design’s number for this recall is 910039.

- January 20, 2023 – Grand Design receive reports of two axle failures where the spring appeared to separate on the axle, allowing the axle to shift location.
- March 14, 2023 – Grand Design notified Lippert
Components (LCI) of additional complaints regarding failed leaf springs on Curt axles. Grand Design contracted third party for testing of tie plates and leaf springs. - March 17, 2023 – Grand Design met with LCI to discuss testing results. It was determined further testing was required.
- April 13, 2023 – Grand Design was advised by LCI to increase U-bolt torque to 80 ft. lb.
- May 25, 2023 – LCI recommended increasing end of line torque to 90 ft. lbs.
- June 15, 2023 – Grand Design met with LCI to review test results and known field incidents on CURT axles.
- July 7, 2023 – Received formal notification of Lippert recall 23E-050.
- July 11, 2023 – Grand Design Product Safety Review Committee met and affirmed scope for impacted CURT axle springs.
Grand Design is aware of 45 incidents starting in January 2023 to June 2023. Two of the incidents resulted in an accident. Grand Design is not aware of any injuries as a result of this condition.

has determined the defect exists with a combination of U-bolt torque specification and dynamic load on the leaf spring. The leaf spring pack can fail under dynamic load. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : An insufficiently tightened U-bolt could allow the leaf spring to fail and the axle to slip out of position. An axle shifting during transit could increase the chance of injury or crash. Description of the Cause : Lippert
U-bolt torque specifications did not provide adequate clamp load on the leaf springs to withstand normal dynamic load. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : Visual inspection of the leaf spring will show shifting of the leaves within the spring stack. Wheel spacing may be different from roadside to curbside, and/or tire interference with body features may be noticed. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : On affected vehicles, the dealer will verify the U-bolt torque is at 90 ft.lbs. Any damaged, non functioning components will be replaced at no cost to the customer. Owner’s that have paid to have this service performed will be reimbursed by Grand Design for any expenses incurred relating to this defect. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Remedied components are verified with the correct U-bolt torque value of 90 ft. lb’s at final stage production. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The issue with U-bolt torque was remedied in production by adding an additional check of U-bolt torque in the final stage of production. Each Ubolt is verified to have the supplier recommended torque value of 90 ft. lbs. Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by First Class mail that their vehicle is affected by the recall. In addition, we will post recall information electronically for consumer access. Dealers will be notified of the recall action (by First Class mail & electronically) and will be supplied with repair information and vehicle identification information.
