Summary
Lucid
USA, Inc. (Lucid
) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Air vehicles. The wiper arm nuts may loosen, causing the windshield wipers to fail. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 104, “Windshield Wiping and Washing Systems.”
Remedy
Lucid
Service Centers will inspect, tighten the wiper arm nuts, and replace damaged parts as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 25, 2023. Owners may contact Lucid
customer service at 1-888-995-8243. Lucid

Chronology :
In December 2022, Lucid
received a report of a wiper arm not working in a vehicle brought to a Service Center. Lucid
began investigating the issue and discovered 10 reports of similar issues between January and August 2022, then an increase of reported incidents through December 2022.
Lucid
’s Product Safety Working Group (PSWG) was first briefed on the issue on March 28, 2023. Lucid
’s investigation continued in an attempt to identify the population of vehicles affected by wiper arm loosening. Concurrently, Lucid
was testing potential countermeasures involving increased torque values. The PSWG received subsequent briefings in May and June 2023.
Lucid
implemented a permanent countermeasure of increasing the torque specification at its factory on June 13. Lucid
briefed NHTSA about its investigation in May and July. Through July 19, Lucid
observed a total of 96 customer incidents of wiper arm torque loosening.
The Lucid
Product Safety Executive Council (PSEC) determined on July 20 that the wiper arm issue presented a noncompliance with FMVSS 104.

has determined that on certain model year 2022 and 2023 Lucid
Air vehicles, the windshield wiper arm nuts may have loosened from the torqued specification. As a result, one or both wiper arms may experience reduced wiper effectiveness or may cease operation. To date, less than 2% of Lucid
Air vehicles have experienced wiper arm loosening. Lucid
has determined that increasing the torque applied to the wiper arm nut has resolved the issue in 2,431 vehicles to date, with no recurrences of loosened wiper arm nuts. The affected vehicle population are all Lucid
Air vehicles that have not had the increased torque applied, which is currently 5,523 vehicles. to schedule inspection and torquing of wiper arms at NO COST to the customer. If any damaged parts are observed during inspection, those parts will be repaired or replaced. All vehicles will have the wiper arm torqued to the increased torque value. Lucid
will reimburse owners for costs an owner reasonably incurred to obtain a remedy for this defect during the period starting from initial vehicle delivery through 10 days after Lucid
’s mailing of the owner notification letter concerning this noncompliance. If an owner has such a claim for pre-notification reimbursement, they may contact Lucid
Customer Care at 1-888-99-LUCID
or 1-888-995-8243. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : All wipers on Lucid
Air vehicles that have not been torqued to the increased torque value are subject to the recall. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : A permanent countermeasure was implemented at Lucid
