Water and/or corrosion on specific locations on the circuit board, may cause the winch to start operating when not intended. Or it may turn off when switch button is released. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : There is a safety risk of personal injury if the winch operates unexpectedly. No injuries have been reported to Warn or Rosenbauer associated with any product failures. No significant property damage other than the winch system, winch mounting brackets, and front bumpers have been reported as a result of the corrosion related issues. Description of the Cause : NR Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : The vehicle driver or winch operator may hear the winch motor running when not intended. Warn identified Rosenbauer as a buyer of the recalled winches but Rosenbauer was experiencing problems with their email server at that time and did not receive the email. 3/30/2023: NHTSA contacted Rosenbauer again to verify but our email was still down. At this time nor before March 2023, we did not receive any notification from Warn either. 7/24/2023: NHTSA contacted Rosenbauer for an update and the email was received. 7/25/2023: Rosenbauer contacted Warn for PO information. 7/26/2023: Warn sent the list of recall winches with Rosenbauer’s PO number. 7/28/2023: Rosenbauer finalized the list by tying the recalled winches to a VIN. 7/31/2023: Recall was filed. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Rosenbauer will notify customers of the hazard including instructions for inspecting for corrosion and disabling the wireless function to significantly mitigate the hazard. Then they will be directed to fill out a claim form on Warn’s website: https://www.warn.com/vr-evo-remote-info. This link will cover identification of impacted remotes, battery removal instructions, and the claim filing form. Some processes will need to be solidified with Warn for Rosenbauer’s owner notification letters. Warn will offer owners a $100 coupon as compensation for the lack of wireless function. Warn will also offer a new corded-only remote (no wireless function) to replace any remote that shows evidence of corrosion, unexpected operation of the winch, or for remotes that have been submerged or exposed to water. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Per Warn: Removing the battery pack from the current remote control disables the wireless function controlling the winch, significantly mitigating the hazard. The remote remains fully usable in the corded configuration when physically plugged into the winch. Unplugging the remote from the winch when not in use eliminates the hazard. The new corded-only remote that will be used in reworked existing unsold inventory, will have a new switch face that is visually different from the current remote. It will not have wireless control functions, including wireless indicator light and mode switch. The internal circuit board will be fully conformal coated and use sealed switches. Warn is designing a new wireless/corded handheld remote is being designed for all new production winches. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : All trucks impacted by this recall were delivered by the time Rosenbauer was notified. There was no need to remedy anything in production at our plants.
