Vehicles not included in the recall were produced with the correct safety chain for the unit GVWR. A total of 1209 units are involved in this recall which includes 2022, 2023 and 2024 Momentum 23G and 25G travel trailers. Production Dates : JUN 11, 2021 – JUN 20, 2023 VIN Range 1 : Begin : 573TM3120N1215665 End : 573TM3127R1220108 ✔ Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : Certain model year 2022-2024 Momentum 23G & 25G Travel Trailers were produced with safety chains that are underrated for the GVWR of the trailer. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : Should the trailer coupler become disconnected from the tow vehicle, an underrated safety chains could fail, increasing the risk of a crash. Description of the Cause : The safety chains installed on affected units are underrated for the vehicle GVWR. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : None Involved Components : Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-586 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Component Name 1 : Safety Chain 16,200# Component Description : FRAME SAFETY CHAIN 27″, 16,200# W/ HOOK Component Part Number : 110180 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : NR Address : NR NR Country : NR Chronology : On or around August 7, 2023, GDRV discovered a potentially inadequate safety chain size for GVWR during an online compliance audit. An investigation was opened to understand scope and consequence of the potential issue. During the investigation it was confirmed that the safety chains were incorrect and that there were additional units impacted. The product safety committee reviewed the findings of the investigation and decided to file a notice of defect with NHTSA. Grand Design is not aware of any customer complaints, accidents, injuries, or deaths associated with this issue. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Grand Design, will release a Recall Notice to all Grand Design dealers and registered owners. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to the nearest Grand Design dealer to have their safety chains replaced. Owner’s that have paid to have this service performed will be reimbursed by Grand Design for any expenses incurred relating to the defect. Reimbursement will follow the plan on file with NHTSA. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The replacement safety chains are rated for 16,700 pounds which is appropriate for the unit GVWR. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-586 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The concern was corrected in production by issuing a Change Notice to replace the safety chains with the correct component. All online units were corrected and future builds will be equipped with the correct safety chain to the vehicle GVWR. Recall Schedule : Description of Recall Schedule : Owners of affected vehicles will be notified by First Class mail that their vehicle is affected by this recall. In addition, we will post recall information electronically for consumer access. Dealers will be notified of the recall action (by First Class mail & electronically) and will be supplied with inspection/repair information as well as vehicle identification information.
