Relay Control Wire May Short Circuit
A short circuit increases the risk of fire.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V828
Manufacturer Ineos Automotive Americas, LLC
Components ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Potential Number of Units Affected 706
Summary
Ineos Automotive Americas, LLC (Ineos) is recalling certain 2024 Grenadier vehicles equipped with the auxiliary switch package relay. The relay control wire may have been trapped under the relay power cable connection fastener during assembly, which can potentially damage the relay control wire insulation and result in a short.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and secure the wiring, and repair or replace any damaged wiring as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 21, 2023. Owners may contact Ineos customer service at 1-919-296-3626.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
Chronology :
In late November 2023 INEOS identified a potential issue with the installation of an auxiliary switch relay on a vehicle at its production facility. In that vehicle, the relay power cable attachment point had pinched and trapped the relay control wiring. INEOS investigated further to understand whether the assembly issue was an isolated case or broader concern and also conducted failure mode validation testing. While to date only one (the original) vehicle has been identified as having the condition, out of an abundance of caution INEOS made a determination of a safety defect on December 7th, 2023. INEOS is not aware of any warranty claims potentially related to this issue.
* On 12/18/2023 INEOS amended its report to include 21 additional vehicles into the population that were not previously included because updated manifests were received after filing, and to adjust the customer notification date.*

- Integrated Diode: Each relay includes a built-in diode that suppresses induced voltage during switching, safeguarding your electrical components from potential damage.
- Small size/Low power consumption/High contact voltage/ High sensitivity.
- Contact Material: Ag Alloy / Contact Resistance: ≤ 100MΩ.
- Minimum operating voltage 8V, corresponding minimum operating current is 100mA; Standard operating voltage 12V, corresponding standard operating current is 150mA.
- Life Expectancy Electrical: 100,000 Operation, Life Expectancy Mechanical: 10,000,000 Operation.
- Never go beyond its capabilities. Try to stay 10 to 15% below what the rate is for
- 12-volt 5-prong (SPDT) relay. Excellent water-repellent and dustproof ability, but do not use it in water
- Be careful when inserting the relay into the socket. If you force it, you will bend the female connectors
- Primary leads use 12 a.w.g tinned copper wire. Coil leads use 16 a.w.g
- Nominal Coil Voltage: 12 V DC; Coil Power: 1.8 W; Coil Resistance: 80 Ω; Must Operate Voltage: 6~8 V DC; Must Release Voltage: 0.6~3.6 V DC; Maximum Applied Voltage: 15.6 V DC
- Quality Material: The a/c relay housing is made of PA66 flame-retardant material with pure copper enameled wires to ensure excellent heat dissipation and magnetism, which enhances resistance to high temperatures and arc erosion, providing excellent conductivity and long-term reliability
- Excellent Waterproof Performance: The fuel pump relay base is sealed and waterproof with IP67 protection level, waterproof and dustproof, able to work stably in all kinds of humid environments, ensuring long-term reliability and durability of the relay
- Relay Specifications: Package contains four starter relays, each model number JD1914-12V-40A, five-pin design, size 1.07 x 0.98 inches, coil power 1.8 watts, coil resistance 90Ω
- Easy Installation: The five-pin design of the radiator fan relay makes it easy to replace an existing relay by simply connecting the appropriate wires to the corresponding pins. No additional tools are required, making the installation process easy and quick to accomplish in tight spaces
- Wide Application: The relays are widely used in a variety of electric vehicles such as automobiles, motorboats, etc. The relay box can be a nice replacement for 582195, 582472, 582473, 584416, 586147 and 586224. They can also be used in a variety of application scenarios such as automotive taillights, electric cooling fans, electric water pumps, motor starters and motorcycle conversions
- 【12V 40A PEAK CAPACITY】Rated for 12V DC systems with a 40A max peak switching current (1.8W coil power, 80Ω resistance). Always keep your continuous loads 10% to 15% below the rated value to ensure maximum electrical safety and relay longevity
- 【PREMIUM AgSnO2 CONTACTS】This 4-pin SPST automotive relay features premium Silver Tin Oxide (AgSnO2) contacts for maximum resistance to arc erosion and contact welding. Rated for a 27V DC max switching voltage, it guarantees extended operational durability and reliable switching performance under heavy loads
- 【14AWG TINNED COPPER】Unlike inferior aluminum wires, our premium tinned copper design offers superior conductivity and is far more corrosion-resistant than standard bare copper. Specs: 16AWG (85/86) for control, and 14AWG (30/87) for reliable standard power output
