Bumper Mounted Spare Tire Carrier May Detach

that fails can detach from the vehicle and become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary
Winnebago Towable (Winnebago) is recalling certain 2021-2023 Micro Minnie FLX travel trailers. The spare tire carrier may fail when loaded with a certain off-road style tire.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the spare tire carrier, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed January 19, 2024. Owners may contact Winnebago customer service at 1-574-825-5280 ext. 5220. Winnebago’s number for this recall is CAM0000033. This recall is an expansion of NHTSA recall 23V270.

PARTS:
280085 – Replacement Spare Tire Carrier Kit
Tools Needed:
Torque wrench, Impact gun, 9/16” socket, 13/16” socket.
REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS:
Using the impact gun and 13/16” socket, remove nuts from spare tire and set tire aside. Remove the tire carrier bolts that attach it to the bumper with 9/16” socket and discard old parts EXCEPT U-BOLT.
Hold the new tire carrier into place and attach the U-bolts around the bumper and into the holes on the carrier.
Thread the U-bolt nuts onto the bolts enough to prevent the carrier from slipping but also so the carrier can still slide on the bumper.
Place spare tire onto the new carrier so that the upper lug goes through the hole and the lower one goes through the center of the rim.
Thread the tire nuts onto these bolts. Using the torque wrench, tighten the nuts to 65 ft-lbs.
Adjust carrier location as to not block taillights or license plate.
Once location is set, tighten the U-bolt nuts to 20 ft-lbs.
Chronology :
In March, a VOQ inquiry from NHTSA stated a customer had experienced a failure on their bumper mounted spare tire carrier. An investigation was subsequently opened.
Winnebago identified a total of 21 spare tire carrier mount issues, with 12 of those issues resulting in total detachment. The first known issue occurred in September, 2020. There are no known accidents or injuries related to this issue.After completing a data analysis and technical investigation, the Product Safety Committee met on 4/10/2023 to review the findings of the investigation and determined that a defect related to motor vehicle safety was present.
In late December a Winnebago dealer notified the company that a Micro Minnie FLX model did not appear to be impacted by recall 23V270. After a brief investigation, it was determined that this model series was inadvertently missed in the data pull as it was thought to be included in the Micro Minnie model series.
Winnebago is not aware of any additional failures on the Micro Minnie FLX.

Descriptive Information : August 20,2020 Production switched to a 15″ off-road style tire that increased in weight by 8lbs. The first incident occurred 09/10/2020.All Micro Minnie FLX units using the heaver tire are included in the population.

Description of the Defect : Winnebago Industries has decided that a defect related to motor vehicle safety exists on certain 2021-2023 Winnebago Micro Minnie FLX model series outfitted with bumper mounted spare tire carriers and certain off-road style spare tires.

Description of the Safety Risk : When loaded with certain off-road style tires, the spare tire carrier may fail over time and potentially become detached from the unit in transit, which could increase the risk of a crash.
Description of the Cause : The tire hoop on the spare tire bracket being too long causes additional vibrations throughout the carrier.
