Summary
Marion Body Works Inc. (Marion) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Pumper, Rescue, Aerial, and RPM vehicles equipped with Weldon 8X16 Input-Output nodes. In the event of a short circuit or wiring failure, the firmware in the node may fail to shut off the output pin, resulting in overloaded electrical circuits.
Remedy
Maron will work with the equipment manufacturer Weldon to update the firmware, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 26, 2024. Owners may contact Marion Body Works customer service at 1-715-754-5261.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
Weldon, a division of Akron Brass Company, has decided a safety related defect exists in certain V-MUX 8 x 16 I/O Nodes, Weldon Part Number 6030-2000-00.
What is the concern?
In the affected products, short circuit protection may not function properly. In the case of a short circuit in the wiring or the connected load, overheading of the wiring or the connected device may occur, and depending on how the product is installed in the vehicle, this could increase the risk of a vehicle fire.
Corrective Action
All of the affected nodes installed in your vehicle can be updated with on connection to the V-MUX network, without accessing the individual nodes. The design files and functionality are not affected. A Weldon service app and the downloader kit is utilized to make the firmware update. This update is estimated to take five minutes and can be completed when the vehicle is in PM without other changes.
Weldon will provide the update application to fleet owners and authorized service centers to install the firmware update along with instructions.

Chronology :
In early October 2023, Weldon was notified that external wiring in a vehicle using the node had melted. The part was returned to Weldon for analysis in mid-October where it was found that when an external short circuit occurred, the electrical output did not shut down as specified. Weldon conducted testing and analysis of the version of the node used in the vehicle as well as prior versions of the node and it was found that for the version of the node installed in the vehicle, the electrical current sensing calibration was outside the specified limits. Weldon found that the calibration was previously updated in production, but was not considered to pose a broader concern at the time.
On October 24, 2023, Weldon decided to conduct a safety recall to address.
October 24, 2023: Weldon Submits NHTSA Safety Recall 23E-084
January 16, 2024: Marion Body Works is notified of the component recall and reached out to Weldon to obtain the SN’s affected to cross reference and identify the affected population.
January 19, 2024: Marion Body Works submits NHTSA Safety Recall for 23E-084.
