JD Limited Edition, Pursuit Limited Icon, Pursuit Dark Horse Premium, Pursuit Limited, Pursuit Limited Premium, 2019-2020 FTR 1200 S, FTR 1200, and 2020 FTR 1200 Rally motorcycles. The brake lights may illuminate unexpectedly and without brake application from the rider. As such, these motorcycles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”
Remedy
Dealers will update the ABS module software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed February 14, 2024. Owners may contact Indian
customer service at 1-877-204-3697. Indian

Chronology :
On Sep 28, 2021, during routine review, Polaris
found a social media post about brake light issues. An investigation was commenced (Oct ’21 to late-Mar ’22) resulting in Polaris
’ determination that the brake light issue was caused by a software error in a supplier component, the Bosch
ABS 9.1M Plus module. On April 9, 2022, the Polaris
’ Executive Review Committee dispositioned the issue as inconsequential to safety, based on Polaris
’ analysis including the brevity of the brake light illumination and that the issue only occurred under specific conditions, and there were no known crashes or injuries associated with the issue.
On April 13, 2022, Indian
Motorcycle (Polaris
) reported the noncompliance to NHTSA (later amending its report on Sep 9, 2022).
On May 13, 2022, Polaris
petitioned NHTSA for a decision that the subject noncompliance was inconsequential to motor vehicle safety, detailing the particular circumstances in which the brake lighting issue occurred and citing to granted petitions for similar lighting issues.
On Jan 26, 2024, Polaris
received notice from NHTSA that the petition was not approved. On Feb 2, 2024, Polaris
filed the Noncompliance Notice 573 Report upon receiving the notification of NHTSA’s determination regarding the petition.
The initial reported affected population was 12,619 vehicles (reported on the April 13, 2022, Form 573). This number is now reduced by 971 vehicles where Polaris
has confirmed these vehicles have already received the software update (e.g., via routine service visits or updated while in manufacturer control) or have never been transported beyond the direct control of Polaris
.
Polaris
, adhering to NHTSA’s decision, initiates this recall for 11,648 vehicles.
There are no known reported crashes or injuries associated with this condition.

Description of the Safety Risk : Unintended illumination of the brake lights may be noticeable to other road users, create confusion for the driver following the subject vehicles as to the meaning of the signal and increase the risk of crash. There have been no reported injuries or accidents related to this defect.
Description of the Cause : Due to an error in the ABS module software, when wheel speed differentials exceed the calibrated threshold, the ABS module software may cause the ABS module to provide a signal to the ECM, which then illuminates the brake lights even when there is no brake application by the motorcycle user. Description of Remedy Program : Indian
Motorcycle will inform dealers of the reported concern and provide
instructions to dealers on steps to take to reflash the ABS module. Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their motorcycle to a dealer to have ABS module software re-flashed . There will be no charge for this service. Indian
Motorcycle will forward a copy of the notification letters to dealers to the agency when available. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component :
Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : N/A As of April 13, 2022, all product leaving an Indian
