Summary
Lippert (Lippert) is recalling certain MTP 20K Surge Brake Couplers with part number 2023050981. The couplers may have an incorrect label stating a capacity of 20,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) when the accurate capacity is 19,000 lbs. GVWR, which can allow the brake system to be overloaded. As such, these couplers fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 105, “Hydraulic and electric brake systems.”
Remedy
Lippert will replace the labels, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a schedule for recall notification. Owners may contact Lippert customer service at 1-574-538-4514.

1/25/2024 Lippert sent surge brake actuator to testing company for analysis. Results from independent testing company determined that the max rating should 19K.
2/9/2024 – Investigation of component completed. Set date to meet with the Safety Committee.
2/21/2024 – Safety Committee reviewed the information and concluded that the data reviewed indicated a unanimous vote for a voluntary recall. Investigation continued for to determine affected unit range.
2/26/2024 – Investigation concluded, range completed.

19,000 pound label. Any vehicles with 20,000 pound GVWR will need to replace the under capacity surge brake couplers with appropriate capacity couplers. Reimbursement will be done at no cost. New vehicles are covered under warranty. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The new label outlines the correct capacity. Any vehicles with 20,000 pound GVWR will have a component replacement that meets or exceeds the 20,000 pound GVWR
