Missing Fuse from Methane Detector

An inoperative methane detector can fail to detect a gas leak, increasing the risk of a fire or injury.

Summary

Mack TruckseBay logo, Inc. (MackeBay logo) is recalling certain 2024-2025 LR natural gas vehicles. The methane detector may be inoperative due to a missing fuse.

 

Remedy

Dealers will install a fuse, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 10, 2024. Owners may contact MackeBay logo customer service at 1-800-866-1177. MackeBay logo’s number for this recall is SC0461.

Description

Certain natural gas vehicles which were ordered with a methane detector are missing a fuse, causing the methane detector to not operate.

Vehicles will be recalled and the fuse will be installed to ensure the methane detector functions properly.

 

Model and Model Years Affected

  • Certain 2024 and 2025 MackeBay logo LR vehicles manufactured June 14, 2023 through February 20, 2024. Vehicle Quantities
  • 137 vehicles (106 US, 31 Canada)

 

Dealer Responsibilities

  • The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act require dealers to ensure that all new and used vehicles are free of safety defects and comply with all relevant safety standards at the time of delivery to the consumer.
  • Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer.

 

Notification Release Schedule

  • Vehicle list will be posted on the Trucks Dealer Portal March 28, 2024.
  • Owner notification letters will be released on or before May 24, 2024.

Methane Detector Inoperative

RECALL INFORMATION

(April 2024)

Mack TruckseBay logo has determined that certain 2024 to 2025 model year LR trucks equipped with a natural gas engine have a missing 10 Amp fuse for the Methane Detection System.

Mack TruckseBay logo has not received warranty claims, field reports, or service reports because of this issue.
To ensure that these vehicles meet MackeBay logo’s stringent quality requirements, follow the instructions outlined below to install a 10 Amp fuse for the methane detection system and test the system functions properly.

 

VEHICLES AFFECTED

Certain MackeBay logo LR vehicles manufactured between June 14, 2023, through February 20, 2024.

There are 137 vehicles affected by this recall. (106 US, 31 CAN)

Repair Instructions

1. Secure Vehicle for Service.

2. Apply the parking brake.

3. Place the transmission in neutral or park.

4. Install the wheel chocks.

 

5. Remove the panel.

 

6. Locate slot F81 in the Fuse Relay Center.

 

7. Install a 10 Amp fuse 20378934 in F81 of the FRC.

8. Once Fuse 81 is installed there should be a green OK light displayed on the screen.

 

Important note!

  • If you do not see a green OK on the display contact E-service for support.
  • If further information is needed for testing the operation of the Methane Detector System, follow Impact Identity 138327090 (Methane Detector, System Description).

 

9. Install the panel.

10. Install the fasteners.

11. Install the cover.

Tightening torque
Interior panel, screw
3.4 ±0.6 Nm (30 ±5 lbf⋅in)

 

12. Remove the wheel chocks.

 

13. Release the vehicle to the customer.

 

 


Chronology :

March 5, 2024 MackeBay logo Manufacturing reports to Product Safety Evaluation Committee that they have discovered that vehicles were built with methane detection systems which are in-operative due to missing a fuse and an investigation is opened.

March 19, 2024 Product Safety Evaluation Committee reviews the investigation findings and recommends that this be brought to the Product Safety Committee as a potential product safety defect.

March 25, 2024 The Product Safety Committee meets and determines that a product safety defect exists.

March 27, 2024 DIR report filed with NHTSA.

There have been no warranty claims, field reports, accidents or injuries reported with this issue.
