Summary
Eaton
Corporation (Eaton
) is recalling certain ECA heavy-duty truck clutches, part numbers 122002-35, 122002-35A, 122002-42, and 122002-42A, for use in for automated manual transmission vehicles. An internal component in the clutch assembly may fail, possibly resulting in unintended vehicle movement.
Remedy
Eaton
will notify owners and dealers will provide a software update, but in certain circumstances, Eaton
may repair physical components in addition to providing a software update, replace the clutch, free of charge. The recall began on November 30, 2018. Owners may contact Eaton
customer service at 1-800-826-4357.

Issue Description:
Transmission Electronic Control Unit (TECU) software 5569997 has been released to mitigate the possibility of unintended vehicle movement due to insufficient clutch departure. This notification is associated to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Campaign Number: 18E-102.
Containment/Corrective Action:
If the vehicle OEM build date is between 4/1/2017 and 6/5/2018, and equipped with an automated transmission model indicated below, and the TECU software is less than 5569997, update software to 5569997 or greater.

- SmartAdvantage.
Field Strategy:
TECU software 5569997 is available in ServiceRanger Data release version 1812-01SCB-2682. The software will be available with a PRO license January 2, 2019.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Eaton
Corporation plc (“Eaton
”) has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists with certain of the above-referenced clutch part numbers that were produced from April 1, 2017 through June 5, 2018. These clutches are used in automated manually shifted heavy duty vehicles.
REASON FOR THE RECALL
This defect may exist in the above-referenced ECA Clutch Part Numbers built during the above specified time frame. The defect is a result of an internal component within the clutch assembly which may be outside of specification and fail, which in special circumstances could cause such clutch component to inhibit clutch departure. If clutch departure becomes inhibited, unintended vehicle motion could occur. Accordingly, the defect can cause a vehicle impact with prior warning. The prior warnings may include increased vibration, noises, and/or rocking of the cab or, if the vehicle is equipped, an audible warning and/or a visual display alternating between “AN” and the engaged gear (e.g., R, 1, 2, 3, etc.) on the instrument panel.
WHAT WE WILL DO
Eaton
will remedy the defect by providing a software update, but in certain circumstances at its option, Eaton
may repair physical components in addition to providing a software update, replace the clutch, or provide a refund of the purchase price. This remedy will be available December 7th, 2018.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
- Inspect your clutch part inventory to see if you have in stock any inventory within the suspect date ranges as shown in the table below. Please bear in mind that it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment covered by this notification under a sale or lease until the defect is remedied.
- If you have a part covered by this recall notice, please immediately contact your Eaton
Representative or call the Roadranger Call Center immediately to notify Eaton
of the part. - Transmit a copy of this notice to known distributors and retail outlets along the distribution chain within five working days from receipt of this notice.
