Summary

Thor Motor Coach (TMC) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Quantum RW28 motorhomes. The vehicles may be missing the mid-ship marker lights. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, “Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment.”

 

Remedy

TMC will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and install mid-ship marker lights, as needed, free of charge. The recall began on April 25, 2019. Owners may contact TMC customer service at 1-877-855-2867. TMC’s number for this recall is RC000167.

It has been discovered that on Certain Model Year 2018/2019 RW28 Quantum Motorhomes, they may be missing the mid-ship marker lights, which is a non-compliance of FMVSS 108. Without the midship marker lights, other drivers may underestimate the length of the motorhome which may cause an accident that may, in turn, cause property damage, injury, or death.

 

Parts Needed

Recall Kit: TMC item number 0444566

Shop Supplies: (1) #8 self-tapping screw

 

Instructions Inspection: 

1. Visually inspect that the mid-ship marker lights are installed on both sides of the motorhome. If they are, no repair is needed and recall is complete. (Photos showing marker lights are installed already will be required for claim.)
2. If marker lights are not installed, continue on to Step 3.

 

Repair:

(Connecting Recall Harness)

See attached print TEE3952 for harness layout (Page 5)

3. Find and disconnect 2 pin connectors between chassis harness and taillight harness located above chassis rail near leaf springs on driver side. Zip tie will need to be removed to disconnect the 2 pin connectors.
4. Attach the two pin connectors to their mates on the recall harness. (Photo below shows the original connectors plugged into the recall harness.)
5. Use #8 self-tapping screw to ground ring terminal to any steel on the chassis structure.

 

(Installing Marker Lights)

6. Dry fit the marker light base to ensure proper fit. When dry fit is correct, mark the location at which the hole should be drilled.
7. This should be directly in front of the fender skirt as illustrated in the pictured above.
8. Be sure to move any harnesses, lines, or other items that may be in the way before drilling the hole. 

NOTE:  WHEN DRILLING THE HOLES FOR THE MARKER LIGHTS BE SURE THAT THE SIDEWALL IS NOT DAMAGED IN THE PROCESS.  TMC WILL NOT COVER ANY UNIT DAMAGE THAT OCCURS IN THE PROCESS OF THIS REPAIR.

9. Drill a 7/8” hole. Make sure that you do not damage the sidewall.
10. Screw the marker light to the sidewall, making sure both attached wires are securely thru the hole.
11. Seal around the marker light base. Be sure to clean around base to remove any excess sealant.
12. Repeat steps 6-12 on the other side of the unit making sure that the location of the marker lights will match one another.
13. Connect each pair of side marker wires to each side marker light and shrink wrap.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Thor Motor Coach (TMC) has decided that a non-compliance which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain model year 2018 & 2019 RW28 Quantum motorhomes. As a result, TMC is conducting a safety recall.  We apologize for any inconvenience this action may cause you; however your safety and continued satisfaction are of the utmost importance to us.

Reason for this recall	It has been discovered that on certain model year 2018 & 2019 RW28 Quantum Motorhomes, they may be missing the mid-ship marker lights, which is a non-compliance of FMVSS 108. Without the mid-ship marker lights, other drivers may underestimate the length of the motorhome which may cause a crash that may, in turn, cause property damage, injury, or death.
What we will do	TMC has contacted your selling dealer and has instructed them on how to install the missing marker lights. This will be done at no cost to you the owner.  The remedy should take approximately 1 hour to perform. If the marker lights are already installed on both sides of your motorhome, please contact us directly at [email protected]. Please provide photos showing marker lights on motorhome, along with VIN. At that time, we will verify that your motorhome does not need the recall repair.
What we need you to do	If the marker lights are not installed on your motorhome, at your earliest convenience, please contact your dealer and schedule an appointment to have this remedy completed. If you had appropriate repairs completed prior to receipt of this recall notice, and if you incurred any direct cost in connection with obtaining such repair, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement from TMC by contacting the TMC Warranty/Service Department.

Thor Motor Coach (TMC) decided that a non-compliance which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain models of the below listed motor homes.

It has been discovered that on certain model year 2018 & 2019 RW28 Quantum Motorhomes, they may be missing the mid-ship marker lights, which is a non-compliance of FMVSS/CMVSS 108. Without the mid-ship marker lights, other drivers may underestimate the length of the motorhome which may cause a crash that may, in turn, cause property damage, injury, or death.

The required action is to install the mid-ship marker lights as needed.

Dealers that have stock units impacted by this recall can access the full list of affected VINs sold to their dealership by accessing the “Service Campaign” portion of the TMC Advantage Web Portal.  If any unit on this list has been retail sold you are asked to notify the retail owner as soon as possible of this recall because their vehicle was not registered at the time the retail notice was mailed.  Please immediately register any retail sold units on this list.  As a reminder, you are required by law to complete this recall on any stock units in inventory prior to retail sale.  Any vehicle lessor receiving this notice must forward a copy to the lessee within 10 days.
