Summary

Natural Gas Fuel Systems, Inc. (NGFS) is recalling certain Momentum 90 DGE SM, 115 DGE TM, 113 DGE TM, 75 DGE TM, 93 DGE TM, 80 DGE SM, 75 DGE BOC, 45 DGE SM, and 115 DGE BOC compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel systems equipped with certain 26-inch diameter fuel cylinders, sold for installation on heavy and medium-duty vehicles. The CNG tanks may unexpectedly rupture.

 

Remedy

NGFS will notify the purchasers, and Momentum dealers will replace the cylinders in the fuel systems with a cylinder from an alternate cylinder manufacturer, free of charge. The recall began April 24, 2019. Owners may contact Natural Gas Fuel Systems customer service at 1-830-302-5200.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Momentum Fuel Technologies (“Momentum”) has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in certain Momentum fuel systems containing certain Type 4, 26-inch diameter CNG fuel cylinders from one of Momentum’s cylinder suppliers. Momentum is conducting a safety recall to protect against the possibility of harm to persons and property, because the safety of our customers, their employees and the public has and always will be Momentum’s number one concern.

We previously sent you a preliminary notification letter regarding this matter.

 

What Products Are Affected? 

Based on the limited information obtained to date, Momentum is recalling all fuel systems containing 26 x 80 inch (40 Diesel Gallon Equivalent) and 26 x 90 inch (45 Diesel Gallon Equivalent) back-of-cab and side-mounted cylinders (the “Cylinders”) that were manufactured by its supplier specifically for sale to Momentum for use in its CNG fuel systems installed on commercial vehicles from approximately June 2018 to December 2018. The attached addendum contains a list of affected system serial numbers, along with the vehicle identification numbers (VINs) for the vehicles containing the Cylinders believed to be in your possession.

 

What is the Issue? 

Momentum is aware of two failures in these Cylinders that appear to be in a similar area of the fuel cylinder. One failure involved a rupture and one involved a compressed natural gas leak. (We understand that the gas leak from the second cylinder was easily observed, audibly and visibly.) Although we have not determined the cause or exact mode of these failures, we suspect that these failures may be the result of a defect in the Cylinders. If such a defect exists in the Cylinders, it could result in a sudden rupture or explosion of the Cylinder causing personal injury or death. There could also be a risk of fire if gas escapes in sufficient concentrations in the presence of an ignition source.

 

What Will Momentum Do? 

Momentum will perform a field retrofit of the Cylinders, replacing all of the Cylinders at no charge (parts and labor).  The recall remedy will take 6-12 hours depending upon the system configuration.

 

What Should You Do? 

You should review the list of fuel systems and VINs that we believe are in your possession. We recommend immediately taking these vehicles out of service until the Cylinders can be removed and replaced.

 

Vehicles in Dealer/Upfitter Inventory. The vehicles referenced in the addendum are believed to be presently in your possession or work-in-process and contain the Cylinders subject to this recall. You should ensure that all of these vehicles remain in your possession until the field retrofit is completed by Momentum. Any affected vehicles that remain in your inventory must be repaired prior to delivery to purchasers.

 

Vehicles Shipped to Owners. You should contact Momentum as soon as possible to arrange for the recall service and replacement of the Cylinders.

 

Note: Federal law prohibits the delivery of affected vehicles under a sale or lease until this issue has been corrected. Federal law also requires that any vehicle lessor receiving this recall notice forward a copy of the notice to the lessee within 10 days.
