Spare Tire Bracket/Carrier May Detach from Trailer

If the spare tire and tire carrier become detached it can become a road hazard, increasing the risk of crash.

Summary

Airstream, Inc. (Airstream) is recalling certain 2018-2020 International, Sport, Flying Cloud, Classic, Tommy Bahama, Globetrotter, and Nest travel trailers. The forward end of the spare tire carrier may contact the ground while the trailer is moving possibly resulting in the carrier and spare tire separating from the vehicle.

 

Remedy

Airstream will notify owners, and dealers will install corrected spare tire carrier brackets, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin June 28, 2019. Owners may contact Airstream customer service at 1-877-596-6505 or 1-937-596-6111, extension 7401 or 7411.

Problem

The affected travel trailers covered in this recall have been identified as having a spare tire bracket that may have a defective weld. This could cause the bracket to break, which could result in the spare tire to become unsecured from the A-frame.

 

RANGE OF VEHICLES INVOLVED: Following are the two timeframes we have established along with the units involved in each:

Group 1 Release Date Range:

11/27/2017 – 2/16/2018 

034837 – 034848 – (Autocamp)

541011 – 544789 – (Classic, Flying Cloud, Globetrotter, International, Sport, Tommy Bahama) 720011 – 720215 – (Nest)

 

Group 2 Release Date Range:

2/4/2019 – 4/4/2019

034963 – 035003 (Autocamp)

547654 – 550355 – (Classic, Flying Cloud, Globetrotter, International, Sport, Tommy Bahama) 720344 – 720370 – (Nest)

 

WARRANTY REIMBURSEMENT:

A notice of this recall has been sent to affected retail owners. A copy of the Owner’s letter is included for your review. They may request that you complete the repair. If so, please follow the warranty reimbursement procedure. If the unit and/or units are in your inventory, or if you are requested to perform the repair for the retail customer, please complete the advised repair and send in a warranty claim referencing this recall number for reimbursement. The time allowed for repair is 0.50. Please contact the customer service department at 877-596-6111 ext. 7491 for parts.  

 

SERVICE ACTION:

Replace the defective spare tire bracket.

 

Process:

Technicians will need to lower the spare tire, remove the two bolts attaching the bracket to the frame and replace the bracket with a new one.

 

Equipment needed: 

5/16” socket or wrench

Spare tire bracket (Part # 450414-02)

 

Step 1: Start by releasing the spare tire. Locate the cotter pin on the pivot arm bracket and remove the pin

 

Step 2: Remove the pin from the bracket securing the pivot arm and lower the spare tire

 

Step 3: After you have the spare tire lowered, locate the 5/16” nuts on the back side of the spare tire bracket. Remove the nuts and the bolts and remove the existing spare tire bracket.

 

Step 4: Using the nuts and bolts removed, attach the new spare tire bracket (Part # 450414-02).

 

Note: If for some reason you need to replace the bolts or nuts you can order those through the parts department.

 

Bolts: Part # 345279-04 – 5/16”x 18, 1 IN

Nuts: Parts # 350147-31 – Nylon Lock 5/16-18

 

Step 5: Using the pivot arm, raise the spare tire, replace the pins.

Airstream has decided that a compliance issue which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2019 Model Year Airstream Basecamp X units. As a result, Airstream is conducting a safety recall.

Reason for this recall	The affected travel trailers covered in this recall have been identified as having a spare tire bracket that may have a defective weld. This could cause the bracket to break, which could result in the spare tire carrier to become unsecured from the A-frame increasing the risk of a crash.
What we will do	Airstream will replace the bracket. This will be done at no cost to you the owner. The remedy should take approximately 30 minutes.
What we need you to do	You should contact your selling dealer immediately to schedule a service appointment to have the defect repaired in your vehicle.

Flat Rates:

The time allowed for this repair is 0.50hrs per trailer to replace the Certification Label and Tire Placard. Please use operation code TTSBR8370100 when submitting a claim for warranty reimbursement.

Please contact the Airstream Warranty Department at 937-596-6111 Ext. 7491 to order the spare tire brackets for retailed units. These will be sent at no charge. For the stock units, the spare tire brackets will be sent to your dealership and will include a list of the serial numbers to be completed prior to retail.

 

Notice:

Per CFR § 577.13(b) – Notification to dealers and distributors. It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by the notification under a sale or lease until the defect or noncompliance is remedied.
