Circuit Breaker Electrical Short May Cause Fire

Summary

Altec Industries Inc. (Altec) is recalling certain 2017 AT Aerial Devices mounted on Ford F-550 chassis. A circuit breaker located under the hood may contact the hood, potentially resulting in an electrical short.

 

Remedy

Altec has notified owners, and dealers will update the circuit breaker bracket and install a insulating chafe pad, free of charge. The recall began on January 12, 2018. Owners may contact Altec customer service at 1-205-991-7733. Altec’s number for this recall is MAB 675.

Dear Altec Owner,

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act, and Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Altec Industries, Inc. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain units mounted on the Ford F550 chassis. These units have the possibility of the location of a circuit breaker causing an electrical short against the chassis. The electrical short can cause a chassis fire resulting in death or serious injury.

Refer to MAB 675 for the items covered under the warranty policy. Altec will supply a replacement circuit breaker mounting bracket to correct this condition.

In order to determine if your unit is affected by MAB 675, compare the serial number of your unit with the list of affected units attached to the MAB. The repair can be performed by the customer or you may contact Altec at 1-877-GO-ALTEC (1-877-462-5832) for further assistance. The repair is expected to take 45 minutes to complete.

At any time, you may contact Altec at 1-877 GO ALTEC (1-877-462-5832) with your unit’s serial number to determine if there are any other outstanding notices.

If you have leased this equipment to another person or company, you are required by Federal Law to forward a copy of this notice to the lessee by first class mail within ten (10) days of the receipt of this notice.

Circuit Breaker Bracket Inspection

This Mandatory Action Bulletin requires immediate action.

This Mandatory Action Bulletin requires inspection and possible replacement of the bracket that mounts the main circuit breaker in the engine compartment. Altec has received reports of the circuit breaker causing a short between the electrical cable and the chassis resulting in a fire even if the chassis is turned off. Death or serious injury can result from a chassis fire.

Investigation has determined that some of the circuit breaker mounting brackets place the cable mounting post on the circuit breaker close to or touching the chassis hood. Altec requires the bracket to be inspected for the proper length immediately upon receipt of this MAB.

Use the inspection Procedure that begins on Page 2. Brackets that are incorrect must be immediately covered by an insulated pad included with this MAB and inspected daily for damage in the insulation until the bracket is replaced. If the bracket is incorrect, it must be replaced within 30 days of the receipt of this MAB.

This repair is covered under the Altec Warranty Policy and can be performed by Altec, the customer,  or the customer’s warranty provider. Altec will allow up to $70 for an inspection and the labor to perform this repair. A warranty claim must be submitted to be reimbursed for the cost of the parts and/or labor. Call 1-877-GO ALTEC (1-877-462-5832) to schedule the work to be done by an Altec service technician. Customers are responsible for the travel costs of an Altec Mobile Service technician if the technician performs the inspection or repair at the owner’s location.

 

Inspection

1. Open the hood on the chassis.
2. Locate the circuit beaker bracket bolted to the top edgeof the firewall (refer to Figure 1).
3. Carefully measure the length of the circuit breaker mount-ing bracket from the bend in the bracket to the top of the circuit breaker. NOTE: do not touch the circuit breaker terminal from the battery with a metal measuring tape. If the measured section is 1 inch or less, the bracket must be replaced (refer to Figures 2 and 3). Order the Bracket Replacement Kit, part number 970738120, and install the new bracket within 30 days of receipt of this MAB. Proceed to Step 4.

If the bracket measurement is more than 1 inch, the bracket is correct and does not require replacement.

Proceed to Step 8.

 

4. If the bracket is 1 inch or less, install the insulated rubber cover included with the MAB to protect the circuit breaker cable mounting post from contacting the hood until the bracket is changed. Position the insulated cover on the top of the bracket with the holes in the cover next to the firewall (refer to Figure 4).
5. Install a plastic wire tie through the holes in the cover to clamp the cover to the bracket  (refer to Figure 5).Start the wire tie from the bottom of the left side of the cover so the head of the wire tie is under the cover.
6. Tighten the wire tie so that the head is below the cover and the bracket. Make sure the tie does not go over the top mounting bolt of the circuit breaker.
7. Inspect the cover to be sure it does not interfere with the red reset button on top of the circuit breaker (refer to Figure 2). Trim the cover as needed to prevent interference, but still covers the top circuit breaker post.

 

8. Close the hood and return the unit to service.
9. Complete the inspection form at the end of this MAB and return it to Altec.
10. Inspect the circuit breaker and cover daily until the bracket is replaced to check for the failure of the insulation between the circuit breaker and the chassis.
