Jack Handle May Separate from Jack Assembly

If the jack separates from its assembly, it may become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

MMDi, Inc. (MMDi) is recalling certain 2019 Cummins ‘G’ A057P788 trailers equipped with Towking brand 12k jacks. The jack handle may have been improperly fastened, allowing the jack handle to separate from the jack assembly.

 

Remedy

MMDi has notified owners, and will provide a nylon locking nut to replace the standard nut used and specific work instructions for replacing the nut, free of charge. The recall began July 25, 2019. Owners may contact MMDi customer service at 1-704-822-4550.

Tow King Top Wind Jack Repair Instructions

Jack Nut Repair on Tow King Jacks

Issue – As seen in IMG 3810 (bottom left), the base of the handle was shipped with a regular nut instead of a locking nut.

A locking nut would ensure the nut does not come off the handle sleeve bolt.

In IMG 3806 (bottom right), the regular nut is replaced with a nylon locking nut , which will not allow the nut to work its way off the handle sleeve bolt.

 

Parts Required (provided by MMDi):

• 6mm x 35mm bolt
  • Fastenal Bolt Part Number 11103347 https://www.fastenal.com/products/details/11103347
• 6mm nylock nut
  • Fastenal Nut Part Number 1140155 https://www.fastenal.com/product?query=1140155&fsi=1

Remove the existing nut and bolt and replace with the new, provided bolt and nut. The nut should be tightened so that it is close to the shaft with a gap of 1 to 2mm as shown below. No torque requirement is specified as the nuts are self locking. The finished installation is shown below.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

As we discussed today in our telephone conversation, United Rentals recently purchased severalCummins generators which were mounted on trailers manufactured by MMDi, Inc.   MMDi has decided that a defect, which is related to motor vehicle safety, exists on the jacks installed on certain trailers manufactured by MMDi in early 2019. As a result, MMDi is conducting a safety recall of the affected trailers.  Your trailers are included in this recall action.

 

What is the concern?

Towking jacks – one brand of jack briefly used by MMDi – utilized a standard nut to hold the jack handle in place rather than the specified nylon locking nut.  There is a risk that this standard nut will work loose, causing the bold sleeve to slip out of position and thereby allowing the jack handle to separate from the jack assembly and the foot of the jack to drop to the pavement.

 

What is the remedy for the defect?

There is a simple remedy for the identified defect, which is to replace the bolt and nut used to fasten the jack handle onto the jack assembly.

 

What should you do?

Enclosed are Work Instructions, together with a replacement bolt and nylon locking nut. Please read the Instructions carefully and replace the existing bolt and standard nut with the replacement bolt and nylon locking nut provided by MMDi.  The repair should only take a few minutes to perform.
