Insufficient Grease on Bearings may cause Failure

The ungreased axle bearings may result in a wheel locking up, affecting the vehicle handling and increasing the risk of crash.

Summary

4-Star Trailers, Inc. (4-Star Trailers) is recalling certain 2019 4S8D337 and 4S4D258LQ trailers equipped with Dexter axles. The axles may lack the proper amount of grease on the inner and outer bearings in the hubs.

 

Remedy

All owners were notified and the trailers were corrected, free of charge. The recall began January 14, 2020. Owners may contact Dexter customer service at 1-574-295-7888 or 4-Star Trailers customer service at 1-800-848-3095 or 1-405-324-7827.

Dear Sir or Madam:

Dexter Axle has decided that a potential safety defect exists in certain axles, provided by Dexter, that are used on trailers manufactured or distributed by your company. Accordingly, a recall to address this issue is being initiated effective March 8, 2019.

The defect involves an insufficient amount of grease applied to bearing on some axles manufactured at a specific Dexter Axle plant between November 7, 2018 and February 26, 2019. This may result in overheating and premature bearing failure.

Affected trailer manufacturers and distributors will be notified by mail regarding this recall and will be instructed to verify the affected units and instructed to perform a wheel-end service to inspect for insufficient grease. Parts will be replaced in accordance with a detailed set of inspection and repair instructions. All replacement part s will be provided by Dexter Axle. There is no cost to owners for this recall.

The trailer manufacturers, as the original installers some of these axles, will provide, through their recall notices, specific instructions for the replacement of brake drums in the affected units. Dexter is providing mobile teams that are being dispatched to customer (trailer manufacturers, dealers, and end users) locations to remedy all axles included in this recall.

Please be reminded that it is violation of Federal law for you to sell or lease the trailers cover ed by this notification until this recall has been performed. Substantial civil penalties apply to violations of this law.
