Incorrect Wiring Can Cause Unprotected Circuit

In the event of an electrical short, an unprotected circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

Summary

Starcraft RV (Starcraft) is recalling certain 2018 Comet Mini, 2018-2019 GPS, Autumn Ridge Outfitter, Launch Ultra Lite, Launch Outfitter 7, Autumn Ridge, Launch Outfitter, Satellite and Avalon and 2019 Mossy Oak and Mossy Oak Lite travel trailers. The fuse/circuit breaker wiring between the battery and the converter may have bypassed the 30amp fuse, creating an unprotected circuit.

 

Remedy

Starcraft will notify owners, and dealers will install a fuse harness assembly to protect the circuit, free of charge. The recall began October 28, 2019. Owners may contact Starcraft customer service at 1-800-945-4787. Starcraft’s number for this recall is 9902439.

INSPECTION INSTRUCTIONS

 

FIG A: Temporarily install a 12-volt battery to the trailer battery wires.

Battery wires labeled POS+ and NEG –

 

FIG B: Locate the 30A fuse at the front of the trailer.

Fuse is beside the junction box mounted to the ODS inner A-Frame rail.

 

TEST OVERCURRENT PROTECTION:

Hook up the battery; turn the interior lights on inside the travel trailer.

Pull the 30A fuse out of the fuse holder at the front of the trailer (Fig 2).

If the interior lights go OFF, overcurrent protection is working properly – no further action necessary.  Replace the fuse and disconnect the battery.

 

If the interior lights stay ON, continue with the following repair instructions.

If the wiring in the unit you are servicing, is not wired as shown, please contact Customer Service prior to starting the repair.

 

 

8GA BATTERY WIRE REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS

 

DO NOT HOOK UP SHORE POWER TO THE TRAILER!!

You may find it easier to make the repair by removing the LP tanks at the front of the trailer.

 

STEP 1:

For trailers with a single 8ga red wire going to the battery B+ terminal:

Turn OFF all trailer electrical components and temporarily disconnect the installed 12-volt battery.

 

FIG 1: 

• Pull the red 8ga battery wire (coming directly from the battery) out of the large loom running along the A-frame.
• This would be near the 12-volt junction box mounted on the ODS inner rail of the A-frame.

 

FIG 2: 

• Cut off this 8ga battery wire approximately 12″ forward from where it enters the 12-volt junction box.

 

STEP 2:

 

FIG 3: 

• Strip 5/16″ from the 12″ piece of 8ga wire coming out of the 12-volt junction box.

 

FIG 4: 

• Crimp the 8ga ring terminal from the kit to the stripped end of the 8ga wire.

 

STEP 3:

 

FIG 5: 

• Remove the short red/white stripe (12″ wire that comes with the kit harness) from the silver stud on breaker and discard it.
• Use a 3/8″ nut driver (or socket).

 

FIG 6:

• Install the 8ga wire with the 8ga ring terminal to the silver stud on the circuit breaker. Tighten the nut with the 3/8″ nut driver (or socket).

 

STEP 4:

 

FIG 7: 

• Attach the circuit breaker to the ODS A-frame side rail (circled) using two 3/4″ screws from kit.
• Breaker will need to be located within 12” of the junction box so the 8ga wire will reach. Put the rubber cap over the breaker studs.

 

FIG 8: 

• Red/white (48″) wire feeds down into the loom and up to the positive battery post.
• The large ring terminal on the 48” wire attaches to the positive battery post.
• Pull out the remaining piece of the 8ga red wire (still in the loom from Fig 2) and discard it.

 

STEP 5:

 

FIG 9: 

• Attach wire ties to close the harness

 

FIG 10: 

• Tie the loom to the angle support of the A Frame.

 

Replace the LP tanks on the front of the trailer if removed.

 

 

TEST THE REPAIRED CIRCUIT:

• Reconnect the trailer battery wires to the 12-volt battery.
• Turn on the interior lights.
• Temporarily disconnect one of the wires from the new circuit breaker.
• Lights in the trailer should go out.
• Reconnect the wire back to the circuit breaker.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Starcraft has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exits in certain Model Year 2018 – 2019 GPS, Autumn Ridge Outfitter, Comet mini, Launch Ultra Lite, Launch Outfitter 7, Autumn Ridge, Launch Outfitter, Satellite, Avalon, Mossy Oak,  and Mossy Oak Lite travel trailers with a 30amp service.

Reason for this recall	The electrical circuit from the battery to the converter does not have overcurrent protection as specified.  If a short were to occur in this circuit, the unprotected circuit could overheat increasing the risk fire or injury.
Recall Remedy	Installation of  a fused harness assembly, which will provide overcurrent protection of the circuit.
What we need you to do	Please contact an authorized Dealer as soon as possible to schedule an appointment. The Recall Remedy is  free of charge and should take approximately thirty minutes to complete.

 

If you had this repair completed prior to receipt of this recall notice, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of the problem associated with this recall.
