Summary
Daimler Trucks
North America LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Freightliner
Cascadia vehicles. The ABS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) may not detect an incorrectly functioning solenoid valve for the ABS/ESC module during certain low voltage start conditions, potentially causing the ABS/ESC Malfunction indicator not to illuminate. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, “Air Brake Systems” and number 136, “Electronic Stability Control Systems on Heavy Vehicles.”
Remedy
DTNA will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the ABS/ESC module, free of charge. The recall began December 2, 2019. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA’s number for this recall is FL-830.

Subject: Freightliner Cascadia ABS Self-Check
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Daimler Trucks
North America LLC (DTNA), on behalf of its Freightliner
Trucks Division, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists on specific Freightliner
Cascadia vehicles manufactured October 25, 2017, through August 27, 2019, and equipped with certain anti-locking braking system (ABS) software.
On affected vehicles, during low voltage start conditions, the ABS electronic control unit (ECU) may not detect an incorrectly functioning solenoid valve for the ABS electronic stability control (ESC) module.
This may cause the ABS/ESC malfunction indicator light from illuminating during an ABS/ESC malfunction. Unknowingly operating a truck with reduced ABS/ESC function may increase the risk of a crash.
The ABS module will be reprogrammed so the ABS/ESC malfunction indicator light will illuminate as intended. Repairs will be performed by Daimler Trucks
North America authorized service facilities.
Your unit will be updated with the latest software per the next agreed upon maintenance update for owners of customer demonstration owners. DTNA personnel will be reaching out to you shortly to schedule this update. The Recall will take approximately one hour and will be performed at no charge to you.
If you do not own the vehicle that corresponds to the identification number(s), which appears on the Recall Notification, please return the notification to the Warranty Campaigns Department with any information you can furnish that will assist us in locating the present owner. If you have leased this vehicle, Federal law requires that you forward this notice to the lessee within 10 days. If you are a subsequent stage manufacturer, Federal law requires that you forward this notice to your distributors and retail outlets within five working days. If you have paid to have this recall condition corrected prior to this notice, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement. Please see the reverse side of this notice for details.

- Proof of payment for the repair (such as the front and back of a cancelled check or a credit card receipt).

Defect/ Noncompliance Description
For this Defect/Noncompliance:
Describe the defect or noncompliance: On the affected vehicles, the ABS Electronic Control Unit
(ECU} may not detect an incorrectly functioning solenoid valve for the ABS/ESC module during certain
low voltage start conditions. This may cause the ABS/ESC Malfunction indicator not to illuminate during
an ABS/ESC malfunction, and therefore to, not comply with FMVSS 121/136, which requires a vehicle to
illuminate an indicator lamp during an ABS/ESC malfunction.
If a noncompliance, provide the applicable FMVSS: FMVSS 121/136
Describe the safety risk: Operator may not be aware of an active ABS/ESC malfunction. Unknowingly
operating a truck with reduced ABS/ESC function may increase the risk of a crash.
Chronology of Defect/ Noncompliance Determination
Provide the chronology of events leading up to the defect decision or test data for the
noncompliance decision. May 2019, the supplier notified DTNA of potential error in ABS ECU
software. May 2019 – September 2019, DTNA evaluates the software with further testing to determine
the scope of the issue. The supplier initially reported the potential issue may not affect compliance of
DTNA vehicles due to how the vehicles were configured. September 2019, DTNA determined the
potential issue affects customer demonstration vehicles outside of our test fleet and began an
investigation to identify that population for repair considerations. September 30, 2019, with an
abundance of caution, DTNA decided to initiate a voluntary recall.
Identify the Remedy
Describe the defect/noncompliance remedy program, including the manufacture’s plan for
reimbursement. The ABS module will be reprogrammed so the ABS/ESC malfunction indicator will
illuminate as intended. Repairs will be performed by Daimler Trucks
North America authorized service
facilities. Copies of the reimbursement plan will be submitted as a supplemental report when available.
