LP Tank May Become Dislodged

If the LP tank dislodges while the motorhome is in transit, it can increase the risk of a crash with the ignition of the propane.

Summary

Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Melbourne Prestige motorhomes. The liquid propane (LP) tank hangers may be the wrong size and have insufficient welding, allowing the LP tank to dislodge.

 

Remedy

Jayco has notified owners, and dealers will install a support bracket on each side of the propane tank, free of charge. The recall began December 9, 2019. Owners may contact Jayco customer service at 1-800-517-9137. Jayco’s number for this recall is 9903501.

INSTRUCTIONS – Install LP Support Brackets  (2)

 

FIG 1:

• Open the LP tank compartment door of the vehicle.

 

FIG 2:

• Brackets from Parts Kit, with tape applied around the top (back & front), and around each small tab (top side contacting the LP tank rail). The tape is required to prevent galvanic corrosion from dissimilar metals. DO NOT REMOVE TAPE FROM BRACKETS.
• Brackets are identical. It does not matter at which end of the tank they are mounted.

 

FIG 3:

• Place the support bracket up from underneath and between the two aluminum tubes that support the LP tank. The two small tabs of the support bracket must be in contact with the underside of the LP tank support rails.

 

NOTE: When placing the bracket up between the rails; make sure the two tabs at the bottom fit flush up against the mounting rails.  If the tabs hit the rail support L bracket, you may have to rotate the LP support bracket 180 degrees so the tabs will fit flush against the support rails.  

 

FIG 4:

• Install two Hex screws from the parts kit in the top holes of the support bracket.

 

FIG 5:

• Install one Hex screw from the parts kit, up underneath each of the bottom tabs (2) of the support bracket and into the LP tank support rail. (Total of 4 Hex screws for each support bracket) FIG 6:
• Place the second support bracket up between the LP tank mounting rails on the opposite end of the LP tank as shown.

 

FIG 7:

• Install 2 Hex screws from the parts kit, into the two holes on the top of the bracket. Make sure the bottom 2 tabs of the bracket are up against the underside of the support tubes before securing the upper screws.

 

FIG 8:

• Install one Hex screw from the parts kit up underneath each of the bottom tabs (2) of the support bracket and into the LP support rail. (Total of 4 Hex screws for each support bracket)

Jayco has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exits in certain Model Year 20182020 Jayco, Melbourne Prestige Class C Motorhomes.

Reason for this recall	The hanger supports for the propane tank may fail without warning due to incorrect material and improper welds. Hanger failure could allow the tank to drop under the coach during transit, increasing the risk of an accident and a fire hazard. To reduce the risk of failure until this recall is complete; do not fill LP tanks beyond 50%.
Recall Remedy	Installation of additional support bracket to reinforce the propane tank hangers.
What you need to do	Please contact an authorized Dealer as soon as possible to schedule an appointment. The Recall Remedy is  free of charge and should take approximately thirty  minutes to complete.

 

If you had this repair completed prior to receipt of this recall notice, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of the problem associated with this recall.

If you take your recreational vehicle to your dealer on the agreed service date and the dealer does not remedy this condition on that date or within three (3) days, please contact our Customer Service Department at 800-517-9137.   If you are unable to get this safety defect remedied without charge and/or within a reasonable amount of time after contacting your dealer and customer service you may want to contact NHTSA.
