Exterior Ladder may Block Emergency Escape Window

In the event of an emergency, occupants may not be able to exit through the escape window, increasing risk of injury.

Summary

Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling certain 2019-2020 White Hawk (144) travel trailers, model 24MBH. The rear emergency escape window can not fully open due to the placement of exterior ladder.

 

Remedy

Jayco will notify owners, and dealers will remove and relocate the existing ladder to prevent interference with the emergency escape safety window, free of charge. The recall began December 20, 2019. Owners may contact Jayco customer service at 1-800-283-8267. Jayco’s number for this recall is 9901503.

Incident:	Emergency exit window may not open fully due to placement of ladder.
Affected Units:	2019  White Hawk 24MBH K1440256-0281 2020  White Hawk 24MBH L1440051-0080
Misc. Tools & Supplies:	Screw gun with long #2 square drive bit Putty stick Tape Measure Ladder Caulk gun 1 tube of 502 LSD self-leveling sealant

 

INSPECTION

 

FIG 1:

 

• Inspect the ladder position in relation to the egress window.

 

FIG 2:

 

• CAREFULLY Open the egress window to determine if it clears the ladder.
• If the window opens FULLY, without any interference with the roof ladder, no further action is necessary.
• If the window does not open FULLY due to the ladder placement, continue with the repair outlined below.

 

REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS

 

FIG 3:

 

• Remove all the screws from the 6 ladder mounting plates on the rear of trailer.
• Remove the self-leveling sealant from the 2 roof mounting plates with putty stick.
• Remove the screws from the two roof mounting plates.
• Remove the ladder.
• Cover the holes left by the removal of the roof mounting plates, to prevent water intrusion until fiberglass repair is completed.

 

Complete Fiberglass repair of the original screw holes for the rear mounting plates.

 

Upon completion of Fiberglass repair, continue with the repair instructions.

• Remove cover placed on the original roof mounting holes to prevent water intrusion
• Hang ladder from roof

 

DO NOT USE THE ORIGINAL HOLES ON THE ROOF TO REINSTALL THE LADDER.

The original holes do not align with the new ladder location.

 

FIG 5:

 

• Position the 3 outside mounting plates ¾” from the rear cap vertical trim.
• Before securing the 3 outside plates, make sure the egress window will open fully with the ladder in the new position.
• Secure the 3 outside mounting plates.
• Secure the 3 inside mounting plates.

The mounting plates have foam backing, so no putty tape is necessary

 

• Secure the top ladder mounting plates in the new position.

• Reapply self-leveling sealant over the roof plates, completely covering the screws, and the original

• Shows ladder installation with proper clearance to open the egress window.

Reason for this recall	The exterior ladder placement may prevent the rear emergency escape window from going to a fully open position. In an emergency, occupant(s) would not be able to escape injury using this emergency exit window..
Recall Remedy	Validate if the emergency window can open FULLY without contacting the ladder and when necessary, relocate the ladder to prevent interference with the emergency escape window.
What we need you to do	Please contact an authorized Dealer as soon as possible to schedule an appointment. The Recall Remedy is free of charge and will take approximately 2432 Hours to complete.

 

If you had this repair completed prior to receipt of this recall notice, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of the problem associated with this recall.

What we need you to do	Be aware of all emergency exits in your trailer. Please test the emergency window to confirm the window can or cannot open fully without contacting the ladder and report your findings to Jayco on the enclosed Reply Form. If the window can not fully open, please contact an authorized Dealer as soon as possible, to schedule an appointment. If you wish, the inspection can be performed at a Dealer at no charge as part of the Recall Remedy. The remedy may take 3-4 days due to the fiberglass repair required, prior to relocating the ladder on the trailer.
