Incorrect OCCC Label/FMVSS 120

An incorrect label may lead to unintentionally overloading the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

Airstream, Inc. (Airstream) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Interstate motorhomes. The Occupant and Cargo Carrying Capacity (OCCC) Label may indicate the incorrect occupant cargo carrying capacity, which can allow the vehicle to be overloaded. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 120, “Wheels and Rims – Other Than Passenger Cars.”

 

Remedy

Airstream will notify owners, and dealers will provide new OCCC labels with the correct occupant and cargo carry capacity, free of charge. The recall began February 7, 2020. Owners may contact Airstream customer service at 1-877-596-6505 or 1-937-596-6111 extension 7401 or 7411.

Replacement Instructions

 

SERVICE ACTION:

Replace incorrect labels with corrected OCCC information labels.

 

Process:

Clean area with alcohol, place corrected labels over incorrect labels.

 

Equipment needed:

 

Step 1: Locate the labels that need to be replaced. Replace both the yellow Motor Home Occupant Cargo Carry Capacity Label on the Passenger Side Door and the white Cargo Carrying Capacity Label on the Driver’s Side B-Pillar.

 

Step 2: Wipe directly over the existing labels with the denatured alcohol to clean the area.

 

Step 3: Remove the corrected “Tire and Loading Infomormation” label and place it over the existing label on the on the Driver’s Side B-Pillar.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Airstream has decided that a non-compliance issue that relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2018 & 2019 Model Year Airstream Interstate Motorhomes. As a result, Airstream is conducting a safety recall.

Reason for this recall	Certain Interstate motorhomes may have occupant and cargo carrying capacity labels with incorrect occupant cargo carrying capacity. Without the proper carrying capacity listed on the label, the owner may overload the vehicle. This could lead to unintentional overloading of the motorhome increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
What we will do	Airstream has provided the corrected OCCC labels to the affected customers. The corrected labels along with a how-to have been provided with this letter. Please read and follow the instructions to attach the corrected OCCC labels over the top of the existing labels.  For any reason you do not feel comfortable completing this task, please contact your nearest Airstream dealership for assistance.

If the appropriate repairs have been completed prior to receipt of this recall notice, and if you incurred any direct cost in connection with obtaining such repair, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement from Airstream by contacting the Airstream Customer Service Department.

If after contacting Airstream Customer Service you are still not satisfied we have done our best to remedy this situation, you may also submit a written complaint to; Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1200 New Jersey Avenue, SE, Washington, DC 20590. You may call the toll-free Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY:  1-800-424-9153; or go to https://www.safercar.gov.) Federal regulations require that any vehicle lessor receiving this recall notice must forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within ten days.

PROBLEM:

Certain Interstate motorhomes may have occupant and cargo carrying capacity labels with incorrect occupant cargo carrying capacity. Without the proper carrying capacity listed on the label, the owner may overload the vehicle. This could lead to unintentional overloading of the motorhome, and cause poor handling, or tire failure. As well, if this notification is not heeded, a vehicle crash may occur.

 

RANGE OF VEHICLES INVOLVED:

2018-2019 Interstate Touring Coaches built between 1/1/2018 and 3/19/2019.

Serial number range: 305941 to 307153

Note: Because our VINs do not run in a contiguous series, there will be Touring Coaches within the VIN range that are not affected by this recall.

 

Flat Rates:

The time allowed for this repair is 0.25 hrs. per motorhome to correct the occupant and cargo carrying capacity labels. Please use operation code TCSBR8378100 when submitting a claim for warranty reimbursement.

 

WARRANTY REIMBURSEMENT:

A notice of this recall has been sent to affected retail owners. A copy of the Owner’s letter is included for your review. They may request that you complete the repair. If so, please follow the warranty reimbursement procedure. If the unit and/or units are in your inventory, or if you are requested to perform the repair for the retail customer, please complete the advised repair and send in a warranty claim referencing this recall number for reimbursement. The time allowed for repair is .25 hrs.

Per CFR § 577.13(b) – Notification to dealers and distributors.
