Brake Pads May Corrode/Detach From Backing Plate

If the brake pad friction material detaches from the backing plate, it may lengthen the distance needed to stop the motorcycle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

Triumph Motorcycles America, LTD (Triumph) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Street Triple RS, Tiger 1200 XCx and Tiger 1200 XCA, 2019-2020 Speed Triple S and Speed Triple RS, 2018-2019 Tiger 1200 XRT, Tiger 1200 XR, Tiger 1200 XRx and Tiger 1200 XRx LRH and 2020 Tiger 1200 Alpine Edition and Tiger 1200 Desert Edition motorcycles. The front brake pads may corrode, potentially causing the front brake pad friction material to detach from the backing plate.

 

Remedy

Triumph will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front brake pads, free of charge. The recall began June 26, 2020. Owners may contact Triumph customer service at 1-678-854-2010. Triumph’s number for this recall is SRAN 579.

Background Information

Triumph’s brake supplier (Brembo) has requested that Triumph replace the brake pads on the above listed models.

Dealers are requested to remove the front brake pads and fit new brake pads as described in the procedure below.

Triumph subsidiaries and distributors must instigate a Safety Recall Action in their country in accordance with the national recall code of practice. For vehicles in distributor or dealer stock the safety recall MUST be actioned before delivery to the customer.

For Triumph Subsidiary and Overseas Distributor dealers using Triumph Warranty On-Line with Parts Auto Ordering Flag switched on: Order all repair parts by submitting a New Prior through the Warranty OnLine system. Entering the above repair code in a New Prior will automatically add the parts required and labour times for this Safety Recall Action Notice.

For Overseas Distributor dealers NOT using Triumph Warranty On-Line or for Overseas Distributor dealers using Triumph Warranty On-Line with Parts Auto Ordering Flag switched off: Orders should be placed using the normal parts ordering procedure.

 

Genuine Parts Return

Dealer to retain parts for 90 days. All parts must be stored in a secure, non-public accessed area and correctly identified with a completed warranty label. Thereafter the parts must be rendered unusable prior to scrapping.

Once completed, please mark the Service Record Book that the requirements of this bulletin have been complied with.

Before returning the motorcycle to the customer, download the latest calibration using the current version of the Triumph diagnostic software to the following:

Unused New Pad Sets in Dealer Stock: You are required to immediately quarantine all stocks of unused new affected brake pads. Do not sell to the public or any third party. Please complete the form attached (Appendix A) and email back to Triumph. See separate Triumphonline Notice for details of return email details.

Dealers holding zero stocks of affected parts are required to confirm nil stock to Triumph by returning the attached form.

Return all unused new brake pad stock to Triumph under the existing MRN (Materials Return Note) process.

Triumph’s Stocks of New Remedy Brake Pads

Triumph’s stocks of new remedy brake pads are limited. Therefore available brake pads will be prioritised for warranty purposes commencing with customer motorcycles. Do not submit warranty claims for unsold new motorcycle stock until notified.

 

Front Brake Pads Replacement

 

Warning

Make sure the motorcycle is stabilised and adequately supported.

A correctly supported motorcycle will help prevent it from falling.

An unstable motorcycle may fall, causing injury to the operator or damage to the motorcycle.

 

1. Remove the front brake pads as described in the relevant Service Manual.
2. Check that the pads are genuine Triumph-Brembo brake pads (refer to Identification of Old Defective and New Remedy Parts above).
3. If not genuine Triumph-Brembo brake pads return to caliper and complete a “Check Only” warranty claim (using Repair Code as described above). Explain to customer that the campaign only relates to genuine Triumph-Brembo brake pads.
4. If genuine Triumph-Brembo brake pads, fit the new brake pads as described in the relevant service manual.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Triumph Motorcycles Ltd. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in your motorcycle, with the VIN shown above.  Triumph is conducting a safety recall to address the condition.

The reason for this recall notice:	On your motorcycle your front brake pads could have potential issues involving detachment of brake pad friction material from the back plate; as a consequence the vehicle front brake performance could be compromised, increasing the risk of a crash.
What Triumph Motorcycles Ltd & your dealer will do:	Triumph Motorcycles Ltd has authorized your dealer to replace your front brake pads free of charge to you including parts and labor. This repair should take around 30 minutes. However, depending upon the dealer’s work schedule, it may be necessary to make your motorcycle available for a longer period of time.
What you must do to ensure your safety:	Please make an appointment with your authorized Triumph motorcycles dealer to have this important remedy performed on your motorcycle as soon as possible. Federal regulations require that any vehicle lessor receiving this recall notice must forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within 10 days.
If you need help:	Please contact your authorized Triumph dealer should you have any questions or encounter any difficulty regarding this recall. Following a notification from our brake supplier, Triumph Motorcycles has initiated a voluntary safety recall affecting a specific VIN range of the following models. We require your immediate attention to rectify the below machines.

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

The front brake pads could have potential issues involving detachment of brake pad friction material from the backing plate, especially but not exclusively when used in a corrosive environment. As a consequence, the vehicle front brake performance could be compromised.

In case of detachment of the front brake pads friction material from the backing plate, the distance between the braking plate and disc cannot be balanced with a single action on the brake master cylinder. As a consequence, potentially defective pads can lead to an inadequate deceleration of the vehicle. Systems assembled with unaffected brake pads maintain their required performance. However, there may be an increased risk of rider injury and/or vehicle damage even if only one brake has an affected brake pad.

 

WHAT WILL TRIUMPH DO?

To address this condition, Triumph is launching a new recall as described in Safety Recall Action Notice 579.

All arrangements for updating of our computer systems have been completed.

Notification letters to current customers were mailed on the 26^th June explaining the action and advising them to return their bike to a Triumph dealer to have the modification carried out free of charge to the owner. Customers will be advised to adhere to national Covid-19 general movement and social distancing rules.

 

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

All affected motorcycles are to be repaired in accordance with Safety Recall Action Notice 579.

 

It is imperative that any owner who has purchased an affected machine be contacted by you immediately and asked to return the machine for modification.

 

Triumph Dealers should take the following actions:

1. Quarantine all unsold motorcycle stock (including motorcycle stock for sale on your website and with 3rd parties) and await details to permit modification arrangements as per Safety Recall Action Notice 579 prior to any further deliveries to customers.
2. Owners of machines outside of the affected VIN range are not connected with this action and may therefore require reassurance.
3. Some VINs affected by this Safety Recall Action Notice may also require other bulletin or Safety Recall Action Notice work to be carried out. Please use Triumphonline to identify all outstanding bulletins or notices and make arrangements to carry out these repairs at the same time.
4. This action is likely to increase visitor tra c to your showroom and service areas. Please ensure all arrangements are made to best accommodate them.
5. Quarantine all unsold new stocks of a ected pad sets (and unsold new caliper assemblies). Do not sell to customers. Complete the attached Declaration Form and email back to the address at the bottom of the form and await further instructions.

ADDITIONAL VINS AFFECTED BY RECALL ACTION 579

 

This notice is a follow-up on the initial attached campaign announcement notice. Triumph has increased the VIN range of affected motorcycles for this campaign.

 

Issue 4 of Safety Recall Action Notice (SRAN) 579 has been saved in the Triumph Online Service Bulletin library. Issue 4 is currently in English only.

 

Issue 4 includes an extended VIN range relating to Speed Triple S and Speed Triple RS models. The new VIN range for these Speed Triple models is From VIN 800262 to VIN AC5827.

 

Translated copies of Issue 4 will be posted to the Service Bulletin library in approximately ten working days’ time and will replace the current Issue 3 documents.

 

Triumph will be writing to the additionally affected customers in the next few days for any retailed VINs.

 

U.S. LAW PROHIBITS THE DELIVERY OF A RECALLED MOTORCYCLE UNDER A SALE OR LEASE UNTIL THE REMEDY HAS BEEN PERFORMED.

Return all unused new brake pad stock to Triumph under the existing MRN (Materials Return Note) process.

Please complete Appendix A of Service Bulletin 579 and email it to Triumph at TMA.Aftersales@triumphmotorcycles,com.
