Summary

Blue Bird Body Company (Blue Bird) is recalling certain 2018-2021 Vision school buses equipped with Ford 6.8L gasoline engines with an optional right-hand mounted parking brake lever. Due to improper routing of the parking brake cables, the parking brake cable may contact and chafe the gasoline fuel line, potentially causing a fuel leak.

 

Remedy

Blue Bird will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and secure the parking brake cable, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 28, 2020. Owners may contact Blue Bird customer service at 1-478-822-2242. Blue Bird’s number for this recall is R20AQ-SB.

RECALL

RECALL Vision Park Brake Hand Lever Cable Routing

Models Affected: Certain 2018-2021 Vision’s with Ford 6.8L Gasoline Engines.

Issue: On certain Blue Bird Vision buses equipped with the Ford 6.8L V10 Gasoline engines and with the Right Hand mounted park brake lever, the park brake cable may not be routed properly. In certain cases, the park brake cable could contact the gasoline fuel supply line to the engine which may result in a fuel leak.

Corrective Action: Install a Cable Clamp to secure the park brake cable away from the fuel line.

WARNING: Always follow all Federal, State, and Local and Shop safety standards and use proper safety equipment, and thoroughly read and understand all instructions before performing these procedures. Park bus on level surface, apply parking brake, turn of ignition key, and chock wheels. Allow unit to cool before working near exhaust system.

Instructions

1. Using the hardware in the parts list above, install saddle mount Item 1-p/n 00024168 in the vacant hole on the support brace above the transmission.

See Figure 1

*NOTE- The saddle must be positioned on the underside of the brace. Reference Figures 1 & 2.

2. Once the mount is installed, use tie cable item 5-p/n 00029998 to secure the park brake cable.

3. Inspect the parking brake cable routing to ensure the cable does not contact the fuel lines or any other potentially hazardous object in the area.

4. Inspect the fuel lines for any damage or rub through from the park brake cable. If damage is present, replace the fuel line.

According to our records, Campaigns Administration has not received confirmation that the above referenced recall, dated May 28, 2020, has been completed.  A copy of Recall R20AQ is attached.   Your buses affected by Recall R20AQ are identified by Blue Bird body number and VIN under Section 2 on the enclosed cover sheet.

 

If this is the first time you received notification of Recall R20AQ, please read the enclosed notification carefully.  Recall R20AQ must be completed, as soon as possible.  To correct this potential issue, Blue Bird will notify owners by mail and provide the affected dealers and owners with the necessary hardware and associated remedy instructions to inspect the fuel line for wear on affected buses and secure the parking brake cable so it cannot contact or cause wear on the gasoline fuel line.

 

Blue Bird will reimburse the labor cost of the repairs related to this recall at no cost to the vehicle owner. The standard repair time (SRT) to accomplish these repairs in accordance with the R20AQ remedy procedure(s) is outlined below.

Dear Blue Bird Owner:               

This important safety recall notice applies to your bus(es) identified by both Blue Bird Body Number and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the enclosed yellow cover sheet. If you no longer own the subject bus(es), please complete the appropriate section of the yellow cover sheet and return to Blue Bird in the enclosed pink postage prepaid envelope.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Blue Bird Body Company is recalling certain model year 2018 to 2021 Vision School Buses manufactured from September 21, 2016 through February 3, 2020.  On certain Blue Bird Vision buses with gasoline engines equipped with an optional right-hand mounted parking brake lever, the cable may contact the gasoline fuel supply line to the engine, which may result in a fuel leak. Blue Bird has elected to conduct a voluntary safety recall to correct any potential contact between the parking brake cable and gasoline fuel supply line. Blue Bird has evaluated the risk to motor vehicle safety and determined that there is an increased potential of a fire should the contact between the parking brake cable and gasoline fuel supply line result in a fuel leak.  A fire could increase the risk of injury and/or damage to property.

To correct this potential issue, Blue Bird will notify owners by mail and provide the affected dealers and owners with the necessary hardware and associated remedy instructions to inspect the fuel line for wear on affected buses and secure the parking brake cable so it cannot contact or cause wear on the gasoline fuel line.

Blue Bird will reimburse the labor cost of the repairs related to this recall at no cost to the vehicle owner. The standard repair time (SRT) to accomplish these repairs in accordance with the R20AQ remedy procedure(s) is outlined below.

Mail the documents in the pink selfaddressed postage prepaid envelope included with the pink reply sheet to Blue Bird for warranty consideration. Reimbursements will be made in accordance with the requirements of the National Highway Transportation Safety Act, Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations, Parts 573 and 577.

If Blue Bird’s records indicate bus(es) subject to this recall were delivered in your service area, a list of affected bus(es) will be enclosed.  The bus(es) will be identified by Blue Bird Body Number and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the enclosed yellow cover sheet.  Dealers should verify correct owners and assure that complete mailing and shipping addresses are provided for each listed owner.  

It is the dealer’s responsibility to verify that the correct owner name, address, and telephone number is provided for each listed vehicle.  Any corrections or updates should be made in ClaimsCenter.  Addresses that cannot be updated should be forwarded to the Recall Administrator.

Federal law requires that any vehicle lessor receiving this recall notice must forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within ten days.

Dealers are reminded of their responsibilities under Section 154 of The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1991.  Dealers are required to complete modifications on units in their inventory before delivering to the final owner.  Reference Blue Bird Body Company Distributor Memo No. 42-92.
