The incorrect leaf spring shims may negatively affect vehicle handling, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2019 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and Freightliner Sprinter vehicles. The incorrect leaf spring shims may have been installed between the rear axle and the leaf springs possibly affecting the vehicle’s handling. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 126, “Electronic Stability Control Systems.”

 

Remedy

DVUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the leaf spring shims on both sides, renew the spring brackets, check the rubber buffers for wear, renewing them if necessary, and adjust the headlamps, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a schedule for recall notification. DVUSA issued owners an interim notification on September 18, 2020. The recall began October 1, 2020. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA’s number for this recall is VS3LEFSPRI.

This is to notify you of the upcoming Recall Campaign concerning the installation of the leaf spring shims on approximately 26 MY19 Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner Sprinter vans.  The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers.  All affected VINs will be flagged as “PENDING” in VMI.
Background
Issue	Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner vans, has determined that on certain Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vehicles of platform 907 (VS30) on the left and right side an incorrect leaf spring shim was installed between the rear axle and the leaf springs. For the affected vehicles with the incorrect leaf spring shim mounted, it cannot be completely ruled out that there could be negative effects on the driving behavior in highly dynamic driving situations. In a worst-case scenario, this could increase the risk of a crash.
What We’re Doing	MBUSA/DVUSA will conduct a voluntary recall campaign. An authorized Mercedes-Benz or Freightliner Sprinter dealer will replace the leaf spring shims on both the left and right sides, renew the spring brackets and its screwing, check the rubber buffers for wear, replace them if necessary, and then adjust the headlamps to the new zero position.
Parts	Parts are still being verified. An additional notification will be sent when parts are available for repair.

Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for a dealer to sell or lease any new MY19 Sprinter vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.   Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired.   Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for rental companies to rent new MY19 Sprinter vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Dear Freightliner Sprinter Owner,

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Freightliner Sprinter vans, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year 2019 Freightliner Sprinter vehicles.  Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles.

 

What is the CONCERN?

MBAG has determined that on certain Freightliner Sprinter vehicles, on the left and right side, an incorrect leaf spring shim was installed between the rear axle and the leaf springs. For the affected vehicles with the incorrect leaf spring shim mounted, it cannot be completely ruled out that there could be negative effects on the driving behavior in highly dynamic driving situations. In a worst-case scenario, this could increase the risk of a crash.

 

What will your DEALER DO?

An authorized Freightliner Sprinter dealer will replace the leaf spring shims on both sides, install new spring brackets and its fasteners, check the rubber spacers for wear, replace them if necessary and then adjust the headlamps to the new zero position. This service will be provided free of charge.  We are dedicated to always delivering the best customer experience, and respect for your time is a top priority. While the minimum repair time can be up to approximately 1.5hrs, your dealer can provide you with a better estimate of the overall time for this service visit. As a matter of normal service process, an authorized Mercedes-Benz Sprinter dealer will also check for other repair measures which might be applicable to your vehicle and this may increase the required working time.
