Cummins
, Inc. (Cummins
) is recalling certain X15
diesel engines, part number D103109BX03. The capscrews that attach the flywheel to the crankshaft may have been improperly torqued, allowing the flywheel to detach.
Remedy
Cummins
will notify owners, and dealers will properly torque the capscrews and inspect for possible damage and, if necessary, repair any damage found, free of charge. The recall began March 29, 2021. Owners may contact Cummins
customer service at 1-800-286-6467. Cummin’s number for this recall is C2402.

We are writing to inform you that Cummins
Inc. has determined that a safety-related defect exists in certain X15
engines that were manufactured between October 27, 2020 and January 11, 2021. Cummins
has initiated a recall of the subject engines. Our records indicate that some of these engines have been shipped to you.
A copy of Cummins
’ initial Part 573 Defect Notification report is enclosed. This notification was submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on February 4, 2021. As more fully described in the Defect Notification, the engine flywheel may be susceptible to detaching from the crankshaft, leading to loss of motive power, which may increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, driveline pieces may be ejected from the engine compartment, which may increase the risk of personal injury.
Enclosed is a list of Engine Serial Numbers for affected engines that our records indicate were shipped to your plants. For engines installed in vehicles that have left your control, we encourage you to make a safety defect determination in accordance with 49 USC 30118 et seq. and, as appropriate, to submit a Defect Notification to NHTSA in accordance with 49 CFR Part 573. Cummins
will conduct the recall, including notifying owners pursuant to 49 CFR Part 577, performing the remedy, and submitting quarterly status reports to NHTSA. Cummins
is requesting that you provide the associated vehicle model identification, VINs and owner contact information to facilitate owner notification. Please work with your Cummins
account team leader to ensure that the requested information is provided to Cummins
as soon as possible.
For engines/vehicles that are still in your inventory, please contact the Customer Quality Assurance representative at the Jamestown Engine Plant to arrange for repairs, as necessary. Please note that Federal law prohibits delivery of these engines, or vehicles equipped with these engines, under a sale or lease until this condition has been remedied.

will conduct a safety campaign to properly torque the subject capscrews and inspect for possible damage and, if necessary, repair the damage.

Description
This Safety Campaign is being issued to address an issue on certain ISX15
CM2250 SN and X15
CM2450 X124B/X134B units in which the flywheel may be susceptible to detaching from the crankshaft, possibly leading to loss of motive power, which may increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, driveline pieces may be ejected from the engine compartment, which may increase the risk of personal injury.
Cummins
has reported this issue to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which has assigned it Recall Number 21E-009.
This Safety Campaign authorizes certified repair locations to properly torque subject capscrews and inspect for possible damage and, if necessary, repair the damage on certain ISX15
CM2250 SN and X15
CM2450 X124B/X134B units.
Note : This field action provides for retroactive coverage of repairs completed by Cummins
authorized repair locations prior to and in anticipation of the release date of this field action. All service providers attempting to file claims for retroactive repairs should reference Warranty Memo #1825 for instructions.
Note : This document does not authorize repairs for damage due to causes other than capscrews improperly torqued during the manufacturing process.
Action
In order to qualify for repair under this field action, an engine:
- will be covered regardless of coverage status, and
- must show as OPEN on QuickServe® Online for this field action.
Note : The ESN list is attached for reference.
After verifying that the engine meets the above requirements, perform the following actions:
- Inspect the flywheel components for damage and reuse per procedure 016-005 (Flywheel) in the appropriate service manual.
- Torque the flywheel capscrews per procedure 016-005 (Flywheel) in the appropriate service manual.
Note : Additional parts, such as o-rings, gaskets and fasteners, that are required to complete the repair, but not listed, may be claimed in Other Claimables. Please consolidate all consumables and claim them as one line item in Other Claimables titled CAMPAIGN SUPPLIES. Please include brief summaries on the details of items claimed.

Inc. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain ISX Engines that were manufactured between October 27, 2020 and January 11, 2021.
This notice applies to your engine(s) listed in the table on the enclosed list.
WHY IS A RECALL BEING CONDUCTED?
The engine flywheel may be susceptible to detaching from the crankshaft, leading to loss of motive power, which may increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, driveline pieces may be ejected from the engine compartment, which may increase the risk of personal injury.
WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT THE PROBLEM?
Cummins
has released field Safety Campaign #C2402 “ISX15
CM2250 SN and X15
CM2450 X124B/X154B Flywheel Capscrew Retorque Safety Campaign” to correct this condition by properly torqueing the subject capscrews and inspecting for possible damage and, if necessary, repairing the damage. This campaign is currently available at Cummins
Distributors and authorized Warranty Dealers. The repair will be completed free of charge and most applications will require approximately nine hours to complete.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

Distributor or authorized Warranty Dealer to arrange to have this campaign performed on your engine. The distributor or dealer will work with you to schedule the best date to complete this repair.
Federal law requires vehicle lessors receiving this recall notice to forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within ten (10) days. Also, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new vehicle or equipment covered by this recall notice under a sale or lease until the defect has been remedied.
