Summary
Daimler Trucks
North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Freightliner
Cascadia vehicles equipped with a Cummins
X15
engine. The capscrews that attach the flywheel to the crankshaft may have been improperly torqued, allowing the flywheel to detach.
Remedy
DTNA will work with the engine manufacturer Cummins
Inc. to notify owners, and Cummins
dealers will properly torque the capscrews and inspect for possible damage and, if necessary, repair any damage found, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 12, 2021. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA’s number for this recall is FL-875.

Inc. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain ISX Engines that were manufactured between October 27, 2020 and January 11, 2021.
This notice applies to your engine(s) listed in the table on the enclosed list.
WHY IS A RECALL BEING CONDUCTED?
The engine flywheel may be susceptible to detaching from the crankshaft, leading to loss of motive power, which may increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, driveline pieces may be ejected from the engine compartment, which may increase the risk of personal injury.
WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT THE PROBLEM?
Cummins
has released field Safety Campaign #C2402 “ISX15
CM2250 SN and X15
CM2450 X124B/X154B Flywheel Capscrew Retorque Safety Campaign” to correct this condition by properly torqueing the subject capscrews and inspecting for possible damage and, if necessary, repairing the damage. This campaign is currently available at Cummins
Distributors and authorized Warranty Dealers. The repair will be completed free of charge and most applications will require approximately nine hours to complete.

Distributor or authorized Warranty Dealer to arrange to have this campaign performed on your engine. The distributor or dealer will work with you to schedule the best date to complete this repair.
Federal law requires vehicle lessors receiving this recall notice to forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within ten (10) days. Also, it is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new vehicle or equipment covered by this recall notice under a sale or lease until the defect has been remedied.

DESCRIPTION:
This Safety Campaign is being issued to address an issue on certain ISX15
CM2250 SN and X15
CM2450 X124B/ X134B units in which the flywheel may be susceptible to detaching from the crankshaft, possibly leading to loss of motive power, which may increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, driveline pieces may be ejected from the engine compartment, which may increase the risk of personal injury.
Cummins
has reported this issue to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which has assigned it Recall Number 21E-009.
This Safety Campaign authorizes certified repair locations to properly torque subject capscrews and inspect for possible damage and, if necessary, repair the damage on certain ISX15
CM2250 SN and X15
CM2450 X124B/X134B units.
NOTE: This field action provides for retroactive coverage of repairs completed by Cummins
authorized repair locations prior to and in anticipation of the release date of this field action. All service providers attempting to file claims for retroactive repairs should reference Warranty Memo #1825 for instructions.
NOTE: This document does not authorize repairs for damage due to causes other than capscrews improperly torqued during the manufacturing process.
ACTION:
In order to qualify for repair under this field action, an engine:
- will be covered regardless of coverage status, and
- must show as OPEN on QuickServe® Online for this field action.

After verifying that the engine meets the above requirements, perform the following actions:
- Inspect the flywheel components for damage and reuse per procedure 016-005 (Flywheel) in the appropriate service manual.
- Torque the flywheel capscrews per procedure 016-005 (Flywheel) in the appropriate service manual.
NOTE: Additional parts, such as o-rings, gaskets and fasteners, that are required to complete the repair, but not listed, may be claimed in Other Claimables. Please consolidate all consumables and claim them as one line item in Other Claimables titled CAMPAIGN SUPPLIES. Please include brief summaries on the details of items claimed.

Chronology of Defect / Noncompliance Determination
Provide the chronology of events leading up to the defect decision or test data for the
noncompliance decision.: February 5 2021, DTNA was notified of an equipment recall (21E-009) by its
supplier, Cummins
Inc. DTNA opened an investigation to determine the scope of the issue. Cummins
has
provided a list of DTNA vehicles that are affected, and DTNA found 11 vehicles across North America (7
US, 4 CAN) operating in the field with the identified engine serials. DTNA has not received any reports
related to loose flywheels or loss of motorize power on the identified DTNA vehicles. February 11, 2021,
DTNA decided to conduct a voluntary safety companion recall of the affected vehicles.
Identify the Remedy
Describe the defect/noncompliance remedy program, including the manufacture’s plan for
reimbursement.: Cummins
Inc. will inspect and repair as needed for the subject capscrews. DTNA will
work with Cummins
for the repair procedure in the field. Copies of the reimbursement plan will be
submitted as a supplemental report when available.
