Daimler Trucks
North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Freightliner
Custom Chass XBA Chassis equipped with Cummins
B6.7N engines. The engine control module software may be calibrated incorrectly, causing the engine to not limit engine speed or torque as intended for certain safety-related functions such as vehicle braking, traction and stability control, speed control, or collision avoidance.
Remedy
DTNA will work with the engine manufacturer Cummins
Inc. to notify owners, and Cummins
dealers will recalibrate the engine control module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 29, 2021. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA number for this recall is FL-879.

Westport Inc. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain B6.7N Engines that were manufactured between February 6, 2019 and September 1, 2020.
This notice applies to your engine(s) listed in the table on the enclosed list.
WHY IS A RECALL BEING CONDUCTED?
Due to an Engine Control Module (ECM) calibration error, the engine may not properly limit engine torque or speed when requested by certain electronic controllers on the vehicle. If the request comes from certain electronic controllers that perform safety-related functions (e.g., Traction Control or Collision Avoidance), this condition may increase the risk of a crash.
WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT THE PROBLEM?

Westport and Cummins
have released field Safety Campaign #C2409 “B6.7N 500k Baud Calibration Safety Campaign” to correct this condition by recalibrating the Engine Control Module with a corrected calibration. This campaign is currently available at Cummins
Distributors and authorized Warranty Dealers. The repair will be completed free of charge and most applications will require approximately 30 minutes to complete.

Distributor or authorized Warranty Dealer to arrange to have this campaign performed on your engine. The distributor or dealer will work with you to schedule the best date to complete this repair.

rate. Engines with other calibrations that support SAE J1939 datalink communications at 250k baud rate
are not affected.”

states per NHTSA filing 21E-014, “To perform their
function, certain electronic controllers on the vehicle may send datalink TSC1 messages requesting the
engine to limit engine speed or torque. These electronic controllers, if the vehicle is so equipped, may
perform safety-related functions, such as vehicle braking control, vehicle traction control, vehicle stability
control, vehicle speed control, or vehicle collision avoidance or other functions. Due to a software
calibration error in the subject calibration options, the subject engines may not limit engine speed or
torque when such a device requests the limit via J1939 datalink TSC1 messages.“

Chronology of Defect / Noncompliance Determination
Provide the chronology of events leading up to the defect decision or test data for the
noncompliance decision.: February 22, 2021, DTNA was notified of an equipment recall (21E-014) by
its supplier, Cummins
Inc. DTNA opened an investigation to determine the scope of the issue. Cummins![]()
has provided a list of DTNA vehicles that are affected, and DTNA found 198 vehicles across North
America (194 US, 4 CAN) operating in the field with the identified engine serials. DTNA has not received
any reports related to diminished performance on safety related functions as it relates to TSC1 messages
on the identified DTNA vehicles. February 24, 2021, DTNA decided to conduct a voluntary safety
companion recall of the affected vehicles.
Identify the Remedy
Describe the defect/noncompliance remedy program, including the manufacture’s plan for
reimbursement.: Repairs will be performed by Cummins
Inc. authorized service facilities by
recalibrating the Engine Control Module with a corrected calibration. DTNA will work with Cummins
for
the repair procedure in the field. Copies of the reimbursement plan will be submitted as a supplemental
report when available.
