Summary
Airstream
, Inc. (Airstream
) is recalling certain 2017-2020 Basecamp travel trailers. The mounting bolts that secure the air conditioner to the roof may loosen or break, allowing the air conditioner to separate from the trailer.
Remedy
Airstream
will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the air conditioning mounting bolts are secure and replace if necessary, as well as install additional foam support blocks, free of charge. The recall began May 7, 2021. Owners may contact Airstream

has determined that the bolts securing the roof mount air conditioner may have a tendency to loosen or break on 2017 – 2019 & certain 2020 Basecamp travel trailers. In the event the bolts break, or loosen, the air conditioner could separate from the trailer. If this occurs, the air conditioner could become a projectile, increasing the risk of a crash, personal injury and/or property damage.

Customer Service Department at 937-596-6111 ext. 7491 to have the foam block and bolt kit shipped to you when an owner contacts you to schedule an appointment. The parts will be shipped to you at no cost.

Equipment needed:
6 Foot Step Ladder
5/16 socket
7/16 socket
Inch pounds torque screwdriver or torque wrench
Isopropyl Alcohol
Parts needed:
Foam and bolt kit part number 382687 A tube of Lock tight.
The kit includes two foam blocks and four bolts.
Step One:
Adding the foam blocks to the rear of the A/C to the bottom of the blocks that are currently installed.
- Set up the ladder at the rear of the trailer behind the rear door.
- Make a fist with your hand then slid your hand under the back of the A/C to hold it up off of the roof so the foam squares are not touching.
- Using Isopropyl Alcohol and a rag, clean the area under the foam blocks.
- Peel off the paper backing on the foam blocks and stick them to the roof metal directly under the foam blocks that are on the A/C.
Before and after installation of the foam blocks.
Step Two: Replacing the bolts that hold the A/C to the roof. You will be replacing the bolts one at a time by removing one bolt and then putting in the new bolt, Then torquing it to 40 inch pounds before taking out the next one.
Remove the two filter covers and the filters. This will give you access to remove and replace the four bolts.
- Put some lock tight on the grade 5 bolt about 2 1/2 inches to 3 inches up from the head of the bolt.
- Install the new grade 5 bolt with the 7/16 socket into the A/C and torque the bolt to 40 Inch pounds.
- repeat steps 1 through 3 on the other three bolts one at a time.
Notice: If any of the four bolts are stripped out and will not tighten to 40 Inch pounds the A/C will need to be replaced and you will need to use the new bolts and foam on the new A/C unit.

has decided that a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety exists in 2017, 2018, 2019 & certain 2020 model year Airstream
Basecamp travel trailers. As a result, Airstream
is conducting a safety recall.
Reason for this recall
Airstream
, Inc. (Airstream
) is recalling 2017, 2018, 2019 & certain 2020 Basecamp travel trailers. Due to the bolts securing the roof mounted air conditioner may have a tendency to loosen or break under certain conditions allowing the air conditioner to separate from the trailer. If this occurs, the air conditioner could become a projectile, increasing the risk of a crash, personal injury and/or property damage.
What we will do
An inspection of the bolts securing the air conditioner will occur. Once the inspection is complete, the next step will be to install additional foam support blocks under the rear of the air conditioner for increased support and then replace the bolts with grade 5 bolts. Note: The new bolts will need be torqued to 40 IP. If any of the bolts are unable to be tightened to the prescribed torque rating, the air conditioner will be replaced. The new air conditioner will be installed using the grade 5 bolts (torqued to 40 IP), as well as the additional foam support blocks. This will be done at no cost to the customer. This repair will take approximately .5 to 1.5 hours.

WARRANTY REIMBURSEMENT:
A notice of this recall has been sent to affected retail owners. A copy of the Owner’s letter is included for your review. They may request that you complete the repair. If so, please follow the warranty reimbursement procedure. If the unit and/or units are in your inventory, or if you are requested to perform the repair for the retail customer, please complete the advised repair and send in a warranty claim referencing this recall number for reimbursement. The time allowed for repair is .50 hrs.
SERVICE ACTION:
Inspection of the bolts securing the air conditioner. the next step will be to install additional foam support blocks under the rear of the air conditioner for increased support and then replace the bolts with grade 5 bolts.
