Valve Stem Stabilizer May Loosen

If the valve stem extender rubs on the wheel, it can cause a loss of tire pressure, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

Tiffin Motorhomes, Inc. (Tiffin) is recalling certain 2021 Phaeton recreational vehicles. The valve stem stabilizer can become loose, allowing the valve stem extender to contact the wheel.

 

Remedy

Tiffin will notify owners, and dealers will replace the valve stem stabilizer, free of charge. The recall began April 22, 2021. Owners may contact Tiffin customer service at 1-256-356-8661. Tiffin’s number for this recall is TIF-114.

PowerGlide Chassis Valve Stem Stabilizers

 

Regarding VIN: 

 

Dear Tiffin Motorhome Dealer,    

 

Tiffin Motorhomes will be issuing a recall on certain 2021 Phaeton Motorhomes built on PowerGlide chassis only.  These units will have the floor plan of 40IH or 44OH and will have been built between 01/18/2021 and 03/11/2021.  These certain motorhomes have valve stem stabilizers that do not fit the wheel, which could potentially lead to a loss of tire pressure.

This letter is to remind you that according to NHTSA regulations, new motorhomes with open safety recalls cannot be sold until the recall has been repaired by an authorized service center.

Tiffin Motorhomes has a very limited supply of parts on hand to complete the recall.  Parts have been ordered but due to delays in shipping, they have not yet arrived. Please call the recall department at 256-356-8661 extension 2176 to check on the availability of parts for any stock units you have that are sold before you are ready to deliver.

PowerGlide Chassis Work Instructions

Model:   PowerGlide Phaeton, 2021 40IH, 44OH

 

To Remove the old stabilizer and install the new stabilizer please follow these steps.

 

1. Remove TPMS sensor from the inside wheel valve stem extension.

 

2. Check inside tire air pressure.

If below 70 psi have the tire inspected for damage.

 

3. Remove the old stabilizer. The old stabilizer may be pushed through the outer wheel and resting on the valve stem extension in between the inner and outer wheel. Be sure the old stabilizer is removed.

 

If wear is present:

A)    Using a 10mm open end wrench, remove the inner valve stem extension.

B)    Install new valve stem.

If no wear is present on the valve stem extension proceed to step 4.

 

4. Inspect inside wheel valve stem extension for wear.

 

5. Install the new valve stem stabilizer. Be sure the new stabilizer is fully inserted into the wheel with flanges overlapping on both sides of the wheel.

 

6. Reinstall TPMS sensor onto valve stem extension.

PowerGlide Chassis Valve Stem Stabilizers

 

Dear Tiffin Motorhome Owner or Dealer,

 

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

 

Tiffin Motorhomes has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists on the following models of motorhomes:  2021 40IH and 2021 44OH Phaeton Motorhomes.

 

Tiffin Motorhomes has become aware these specific models of motorhomes that are built on the PowerGlide chassis and built between the dates of January 18, 2021 and March 4, 2021 may have incorrectly sized valve stem stabilizers installed.

 

These specific chassis may have been built with tire valve stem stabilizers that can become loose and dislodge from the wheel which may allow the valve stem extension to come into contact with the outer wheel rim opening.  This possible contact may cause damage to the valve stem resulting in a loss of air pressure in the inner tire. A loss of air pressure in the inner tire on a motorhome with a single drive axle may overload the outer tire and increase the risk of a crash.

 

Drivers may be warned that there is a lack of inner tire pressure by conducting a daily pre-trip inspection which includes checking the tire pressure of all tires.  A visual inspection may reveal a stabilizer that is dislocated, damage to the stem extension or the rim and low tire pressure of the inner tire.  Drivers may also be able to identify a loss of tire pressure from the tire pressure monitoring system which is installed on these specific coaches.  Drivers will get a low tire warning, then a very low tire warning.  Both warnings will come with audible alarms and warning messages that will appear on the instrument panel.  These alarms should provide adequate time for a driver to safely pull over before a complete loss of air pressure or other issues.

 

Tiffin Motorhomes will send the owners the correct updated parts along with the work instructions to have the retainers installed.  Please take your motorhome to a reputable service center OR dealer of your choice to have this inspection completed and the repairs made if needed.  Please allow up to 30 minutes to have this repair completed.    This work will be completed at no charge to you, the owner.  We have included a return sheet to be submitted by the repairing service center with their claim for payment.
