Undersized Wire May Melt

An undersized wire may melt, increasing the risk of a fire.

Summary

Airstream, Inc. (Airstream) is recalling certain 2021 Interstate 19 touring coaches. The wiring harness for the radio may have an undersized wire.

 

Remedy

Airstream will notify owners, and dealers will replace the circuit breaker to limit the current passing through the wire to prevent an overload condition, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed June 18, 2021. Owners may contact Airstream customer service at 1-877-596-6505 or 1-937-596-6111 ext. 7401 or 7411.

Subject: Incorrect Breaker Terminal Wiring

Airstream has discovered that the Sony radio power circuit on certain Interstate 19 motorhomes was incorrectly sized at 15A. The wire size in the body harness is 16 AWG, which is undersized for the 15 A breaker. In an overcurrent situation, the 16 AWG wire could melt and cause a fire. The circuit breaker will need to be replaced with the correct size of 8A.

RANGE OF VEHICLES INVOLVED:

2021 Airstream Interstate 19 motorhomes built between May 15, 2020 – April 19, 2021

Serial number range: 306010 – 308872

Note: Because our VINs do not run in a contiguous series, there will be units in the VIN range  which will not be affected by this Recall.

 

Parts Needed:

• 8-amp Thermal Breaker – Airstream Part # 510947-08
• Breaker Label

 

The following procedure outlines the process for replacing the radios 15A circuit breaker with the proper 8A breaker on the  M-4 buss bar. The buss bar is located in the rear enclosure, under the couch, and can be accessed from the rear doors.

 

Procedure:

 

1. Open the rear doors of the touring coach and access the disconnect enclosure. It is located under the couch, on the roadside of the coach.

 

2. Remove the front cover of the enclosure.

 

3. Disconnect CBL 18 (8 Ga. Red wire) from the M-4 buss bars upper CB4 location (see Figure 1). Tape off the connector end to prevent this wire from short circuiting. (CBL 18 is a 12VDC live wire coming from the 24-hour power, located on buss bar M-6).

 

4. Disconnect the solar power wire M4d (8 Ga. Red wire) from the M-4 buss bars lower CB4 location. Tape off the connector end to prevent this wire from short circuiting.

 

5. Remove the radio breaker CB1 (15A) and replace it with the new 8A circuit breaker. Torque the nut to 24 in/lbs.

 

6. The correct breaker sizes are as follows:
   1. CB1 – Radio Power: 8A
   2. CB2 – 24-hour Power: 8A
   3. CB3 – Macerator Pump/Dump Valves: 20A
   4. CB4 – Solar: 40A
   5. CB5 – Main Disconnect: 6A
   6. CB6 – Waste Hose Reel: 15A

 

7. Remove the tape from CBL 18 and reconnect the cable to the top of the CB4 breaker. Torque the nut to 24 in/lbs.

 

8. Remove the tape from wire M4d and reconnect the wire to the bottom of the CB4 breaker. Torque the nut to 24 in/lbs.

 

9. Print out and affix an updated label over the existing label.

 

10. Reassemble the enclosure.
