Spare Tire Carrier Can Detach

A broken spare tire carrier could detach, becoming a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

Jayco, Inc. (Jayco) is recalling certain 2021 Travel Trailer Jay Feather Micro trailers. The spare tire carrier could break at the bend radius or gusset.

 

Remedy

Dealers will install two Z-brackets, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 9, 2021. Owners may contact Jayco customer service at 1-800-283-8267. Jayco’s number for this recall is 9901566.

Incident:	Spare tire carrier may break at bend radius or gusset and fall/detach from the travel trailer during transit.

INSPECTION STEPS

1.) Remove nuts holding spare tire onto spare tire carrier with a 13/16” thin wall socket.

2.) Remove spare tire from carrier.

3.) Inspect spare tire carrier for Z-brackets already installed. No further action needed.

4.) Inspect spare tire carrier for any physical damage in the Circled area identified below.

 

5) If spare tire carrier has damage replace complete spare tire carrier AND add two Z brackets. Order Kit 21V-317B.

 

6) If spare tire carrier has no physical damage and there are no Z-brackets installed, add two Z-brackets to spare tire carrier.

Order Kit 21V-317A.

Installing Z-Brackets onto Tire Carrier

1) Slide one Z-bracket over spare tire carrier studs and over 3/8” bolts.

 

2) Slide second Z-bracket over spare tire carrier studs and over 3/8” bolts.

 

3) Using just your hand, start threading a 3/8”-16” serrated flange nuts onto 3/8” bolts protruding out of rear wall.

 

4) Once all of the 3/8”-16 nuts are started, use 9/16” deep socket and tighten nuts to 30 ft.-lbs. against each Z-bracket.

 

5) When all 3/8”-16 nuts are tightened, re-check that all nuts are torqued to 30 ft.-lbs. The completed installation should look as shown below.

 

6) Position spare tire back onto spare tire carrier.

 

7) Using the two ½-20 lug nuts provided with service kit, use ¾” deep thin wall socket and secure spare tire to spare tire carrier by torqueing nuts to 90 ft.-lbs. The completed installation should look like one of the two configurations shown below.

Dear Valued Customer:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

 

Jayco has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2021, Jay Feather Micro travel trailers.

 

Reason for this recall

The spare tire carrier may break and fall off of the travel trailer causing a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash.

 

Recall Remedy

Remedy consists of bolting on 2-Z brackets to the original spare tire carrier for additional reinforcement. The remedy will be performed free of charge to you and will take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

 

What we need you to do

Please contact a Jayco certified repair facility and schedule an appointment for this remedy. CAUTION: Remove the spare tire from the carrier and stow in the cargo area until the recall remedy is complete.

 

Federal regulations require that any vehicle lessor receiving this recall notice must forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within ten days.

 

If you had this repair completed prior to receipt of this recall notice, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of the problem associated with this recall.

 

If you take your recreational vehicle to your dealer on the agreed service date and the dealer does not remedy this condition on that date or within three (3) days, please contact our Customer Service Department at 800-283-8267. If you are unable to get this safety defect remedied without charge and/or within a reasonable amount of time after contacting your dealer and Jayco customer service, you may want to contact NHTSA.
