A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Summary

Motor Coach Industries (MCI) is recalling certain 2017-2018 D4000, 2017-2019 D4005, D4000ISTV, D4505, 2017-2020 D4500, J4500, 2018-2020 D45CRTLE, and 2018-2021 J3500 vehicles. The sealing washer may not seat correctly in the pilot bore holes, allowing the high pressure fuel rail assembly to leak.

 

Remedy

Dealers will inspect the rail threads, and replace the rail as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 28, 2021. Owners may contact MCI customer service at 1-800-241-2947. MCI’s number for this recall is R21-009.

Subject: Motor Vehicle Safety Recall 21V- 364 – Cummins High-Pressure Fuel Rail

To Whom it May Concern:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle

Safety Act.

Motor Coach Industries Inc. (MCI) has decided, that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists on specific MCI vehicles equipped with L9 and ISX12 Diesel engines manufactured ins Inc. (Cummins). Based on information provided by Cummins. MCI has determined thatlllllllllllll is the Owner/Operator of the vehicles listed below which are affected by this recall action

Cummins has declared an Equipment Recall (21E-032) with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This recall affects all Cummins L9 and ISX12 engines manufactured between January 2, 2017 and October 16, 2020.

 

Cummins has informed MCI that the high-pressure fuel rail assembly may develop leaks, which may result in an undetected prolonged diesel fuel spray. The rail end sealing bores in the fuel rail may have undersized pilot bores for the sealing washer, thus preventing the washer from properly seating, potentially resulting in inadequate load for the joint to remain properly sealed in service.

 

A leak involving the spraying or misting of fuel in the presence of an ignition source may increase the risk of fire.

 

In the event of such a failure, you may see or smell diesel fuel. In some cases, the check engine lamp may illuminate.

 

Parts and labor required to accomplish the recall will be provided by Cummins at no cost. Please contact your local Cummins authorized service center to schedule the recall corrective action. You may also contact the MCI Customer Service Line at 1-800-241-2947 if you have any questions about this recall campaign.

 

The inspection and rectification for this issue is described in NHTSA Equipment Recall 21E-032. Cummins estimates the repair time to be approximately 3 to 4 hours, excluding vehicle and shop logistics.

 

If you are a lessor of vehicles which are affected, it is required that any vehicle lessor receiving this recall notice must forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within ten days.

 

If you have sold or otherwise transferred the vehicle(s) identified above, please contact the MCI Customer Service Line at 1-800-241-2947 with all of the information you have regarding the current owner/operator of the vehicle(s).

 

If you had this corrective action performed before you received this letter, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of the problem associated with this recall.
