® Intellipark® Parking Brake System Recall
Bendix
Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC (Bendix
) is conducting a voluntary safety recall campaign, Recall No.: 21E070, involving the Bendix
® Intellipark® Parking Brake System’s Dash Electronic Control Unit (DECU).
Problem Description:
See Figure 1. Bendix
has determined that the DECU of the affected Bendix
Intellipark electronic parking brake control systems incorrectly detects an internal fault at speeds up to 3.1 mph (5 kph). The fault disables the Intellipark system, meaning the loss of the primary Intellipark function to park and unpark the vehicle. In this situation, the driver cannot change the parking brake state using the dash-mounted switches. Flashing of the dash-mounted LED indicator signals that the electronic parking brake system is not available. The driver may not be aware that the parking brake is not set. This may lead to unintended vehicle movement, increasing the risk of a crash.
The driver must turn off the ignition and fan down the service brakes to deplete the reservoirs. The low pressure triggered by this action prompts a spring brake application to park the vehicle. The internal system fault will clear when the vehicle ignition is turned off for at least 35 seconds and then back on.
Vehicles Affected:
This recall includes all Intellipark DECUs manufactured before June 15, 2021. This action does not affect Intellipark DECUs manufactured after June 15, 2021.
What You Need To Do:
Immediately stop using and/or selling any of the Intellipark DECUs that fall within the recall parameters. It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer or distributor to sell an Intellipark DECU that is subject to this recall. Unless otherwise given specific instructions by Bendix
, contact your OEM to determine if your vehicle falls within these recall parameters.
Identification:
See Figure 2. A defective Intellipark DECU can be identified by the manufacturing date code on the DECU. If the DECU has a date code that is any date before, and inclusive of, June 15, 2021, the DECU falls within the recall parameters. The DECU needs recalibrated.
Figure 2 – Intellipark DECU Label
Interpreting the Date Code:
See Figure 3. A date code is displayed on the Bendix
® Intellipark® Dash Electronic Control Unit (DECU) label which is located on the underside of the switch’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU). Locate the label on the DECU to read the date code. The portion of the date code that determines the date of manufacture can be interpreted as follows:
- The first field is the month (A = January, B = February, etc. – excluding the letter I – so that J = September, and so on);
- The next two fields are the day of the month (e.g. 01 = 1st); and
- The next two fields are the year (e.g. 20 = 2020).
Inventory Disposition:
If your inventory contains Intellipark DECUs that fall within Figure 3 – Intellipark DECU Date Code Interpretation the recall date range, please contact Ms. Shelley Lammers by emailing Intelliparkcampaign21@bendix
.com or calling 1-604-242-7409 to arrange for the return of any affected inventory currently in stock. As a reminder, you will need to place an offsetting no-cost order to replenish the returned stock.
Submitting A Claim:
Unless otherwise given specific instructions by Bendix
, contact your OEM to submit a claim.
Disposition of the Impacted Intellipark DECU Parking Brake Switch:
Unless otherwise given specific instructions by Bendix
, please contact your OEM for instructions regarding the disposition of the Intellipark DECU(s).
Replacing Defective Intellipark DECU Parking Brake Switches:
Unless otherwise given specific instructions by Bendix
, please contact your OEM for instructions regarding replacement of the Intellipark DECU(s).
