Incorrect Adhesive On Top Foil

A separated sealer plate can become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company (Utility Trailer) is recalling certain 2022 VS2RA trailers. The incorrect tape was installed on the top foil, which could result in the sealer plate separating from the roof.

 

Remedy

Dealers will inspect the adhesive, and replace it if necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 2, 2021. Owners may contact Utility Trailer’s customer service at 1-800-423-6591. Utility Trailer’s number for this recall is SB-19-009.

Prior to rear sealer plate installation, measure/locate roof skin clamping strips and grind the clamping strip “lip” in the specified area to allow roof foil sealer plate mounting. Lip will need to be removed between the 15” and 19” on both R/S and C/S if not already done so.

* Caution: Do not grind into the roof skin.

(Prep and Rear Bracket(s) Install)

• Ensure the roof surface at least 19” in front of the end of the rear header is cleaned with alcohol (allow to flash off)

 

• Clean the entire surface of the sealer plate where VHB tape will be affixed (allow to flash off)

 

• Cut 100” of the 1.5” VBH tape and affix it to the cleaned surface of sealer plate (affix tape towards the forward edge of plate sealer plate will have ½” of exposed aluminum)

 

• Locate all pre existing mounting holes (x14) and drill out to ¼”.

 

• • 3 on CS and RS of top side rail used for sealer plate

 

• • 8 on rear header for 4 header brackets/mounting clips

 

• Install x4 mounting clips/brackets on header with the supplied ¼” rivets

• Locate existing holes for sealer plate (approx. 18” forward of header) the CS and RS top side rail

 

• Line up sealer plate over holes:

 

• • Offset the sealer plate rearward so that the ½” not covered with VHB tape is towards the rear
• • Using a ¼” bit, drill the sealer plate through the holes on the CS and RS top side rail
• • Clamp one side in place while peeling the protective film of the double sided VHB tape affix to roof skin.
• • Fasten CS and RS with ¼” rivets
• • Ensure the clearance harness is moved out of the drill zone of attachment rivets when sealer plate is removed and replaced.

• Line up rear edge of UAT to rear header

 

• Brack drill (¼”) holes, 2 per header clip/bracket and secure with ¼” supplied rivets

IMPORTANT NON-COMPLIANCE EQUIPMENT RECALL NOTICE

 

RECALL – UAT Top Foil (incorrect tape at sealer strip)

 

This is to inform you that Utility Trailer Manufacturing Company notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the start of a voluntary Non-Compliance recall involving the top foil installed on Utility trailers.  The recall has been assigned number 21V676 by NHTSA.

 

The problem:

This recall is specific to the top faring installed on production orders listed below.  Utility has identified on some units within the posted VIN range, an incorrect tape was used to attach the sealer strip on the top foil. Improper tape could cause the middle section of the top fairing to separate from the roof skin.

 

Affected VINs:

This recall notice provides instructions for the following trailers produced out of Piedras Negras, MX between June 021 – July 2021:

• N8-7062
• N8-7310
• N8-7311
• N8-7312

 

You are receiving this notice because Utility’s records show you as the purchaser of the affected trailers.

• Attached is a list of your VINs

 

Next Steps:

Utility Trailer Manufacturing will provide, at no cost, a repair or replacement of the top faring if, after being inspected, is found to have the incorrect tape.

 

The following actions can be taken by vehicle owners prior to arrival to domiciled location:

 

If not already removed and/or repaired/replaced and while in transit to the domiciled location, remove the UAT top faring to remain in operation without the risk of top faring separation.
