Cummins
, Inc. (Cummins
) is recalling certain Electric Drivetrain Systems, model number BES CM2450 EV101B, and part number D1U0001BX03. When a system shutdown occurs, the high voltage shutdown override switch may not function, with no warning to the driver.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and update as necessary, the parameter settings for the protection override switch, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 8, 2021. Owners may contact Cummins
customer service at 1-800-286-6467. Cummins

Description
This Safety Campaign is being issued to address an issue in certain BES CM2450 EV101B SCMs that may, under certain circumstances, cause the high voltage shutdown override switch to not function, without warning the driver, when a system shutdown fault occurs. If the vehicle shuts down sooner than the driver expects, the driver may have insufficient opportunity to move the vehicle to safe location, increasing the risk of a crash. This is the subject of NHTSA Recall 21E083. The improvement consists of connecting the Cummins
INSITE Service Tool to the SCM, verifying the parameter settings for the Hybrid
System Protection Override Switch, and updating the parameter settings where necessary.
Action
In order to qualify for repair under this field action, an engine:
1. will be covered Regardless of coverage status, and
2. must show as OPEN on QuickServe® Online for this field action.
Note : The SSN list is attached for reference.
After verifying that the engine meets the above requirements, perform the following actions:
1. Connect to the SCM using Insite.
2. Navigate to Features and Parameters within Insite.
3. Navigate to SAE J1939 Multiplexing.
4. Confirm the Hybrid
System Protection Override Switch is set to Enable and Source Address is set to 33-Body Controller.
5. If the parameter(s) is(are) not set to these values, update the parameter(s) accordingly and save changes to the SCM.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Cummins
Inc. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain BES CM2450 EV101B electric drivetrain systems that were manufactured between November 1, 2020 and May 21, 2021.
This notice applies to the electric drivetrain systems in your vehicle(s) listed on the enclosed table.
WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?
The high voltage shutdown override switch may not function, without warning the driver, when a system shutdown fault occurs.
If the vehicle shuts down sooner than the driver expects, the driver may have insufficient opportunity to move the vehicle to a safe location, increasing the risk of a crash.
WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT THE PROBLEM?
Cummins
has released field Safety Campaign #C2491 “BES CM2450 EV101B Shutdown Override Safety Campaign” to correct this condition by updating a parameter in the System Control Module. This campaign is currently available at Cummins
Distributors and authorized Warranty Dealers. The repair will be completed free of charge and most applications will require approximately 1 hour to complete.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
Cummins
recommends that you notify drivers that the high voltage shutdown override switch may not function until the repair is completed.

Distributor or authorized Warranty Dealer to arrange to have this campaign performed on your drivetrain system. The distributor or dealer will work with you to schedule the best date to complete this repair.

Inc. has determined that a safety-related defect exists in certain BES CM2450 EV101B Electric Drivetrain Systems that were manufactured between November 1, 2020 and May 21, 2021. Cummins
has initiated a recall of the subject systems. Our records indicate that some of these systems have been shipped to you.
A copy of Cummins
’ initial Part 573 Defect Notification report is enclosed. This notification was submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on September 3, 2021. As more fully described in the Defect Notification, the Hybrid
System Protection feature high voltage shutdown override switch may not function, without warning to the driver, when a system shutdown fault occurs. If this occurs, it may increase the risk of a crash.
Enclosed is a list of the affected systems that our records indicate were shipped to your plants. For systems installed in vehicles that have left your control, we encourage you to make a safety defect determination in accordance with 49 USC 30118 et seq. and, as appropriate, to submit a Defect Notification to NHTSA in accordance with 49 CFR Part 573. Cummins
will conduct the recall, including notifying owners pursuant to 49 CFR Part 577, performing the remedy, and submitting quarterly status reports to NHTSA. Cummins
is requesting that you provide the associated vehicle model identification, VINs and owner contact information to facilitate owner notification. Please work with your Cummins
account team leader to ensure that the requested information is provided to Cummins
as soon as possible.
For systems/vehicles that are still in your inventory, please contact Jim Priestley on 607-6443925 to arrange for repairs, as necessary. Please note that Federal law prohibits delivery of these systems, or vehicles equipped with these systems, under a sale or lease until this condition has been remedied.
