Rear Suspension Fasteners Not Tightened Properly
Loose or broken suspension fasteners can allow the rear-drive axle to shift out of place, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary
Shyft Group is recalling certain 2020-2022 Spartan RV Chassis K1 and K2 recreational vehicles. The rear suspension mounting fasteners that attach the rear-drive axle to the rear suspension may not have been tightened properly, which could allow the fasteners to loosen or break.
Remedy
Shyft Group will inspect the rear suspension fasteners for damage, and replace and tighten them as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on November 16, 2021. Owners may contact Shyft Group’s customer service at 1-800-582-3454. Shyft Group’s number for this recall is 21-22.

This notice applies to the vehicle identification number in the label below.
Dear Valued Customer,
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
The Shyft Group, Inc. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2020, 2021 and 2022 model year K1 and K2 model Spartan RV Chassis.
What is the Defect?
Certain rear suspension mounting fasteners that attach the rear drive axle to the rear suspension may not have been tightened to their proper value. As a result, the fasteners could break or be loose enough to allow the rear drive axle to shift.
What is the Safety Risk?
A shift in the rear drive axle could increase the risk of a crash.
What is the Warning?
The rear drive axle could shift without warning.
What is the Remedy?
The rear suspension fasteners checked for damage and if damaged they will be replaced and tightened to the correct torque value. If there is no damage and no torque mark, the fasteners will be tightened to the correct torque value. The inspection of the fasteners should take no more than 0.5 hour. To replace and tighten the fasteners to the correct torque value should take no more than 2 hours. However, due to scheduling times the service provider may need your vehicle for longer.
What You Should Do:
Call Spartan RV Chassis at 1-800-543-4277 to locate a qualified service center near you. Steps will be taken to ensure the work is performed at the nearest service center.
Leased Vehicles:
The lessor must notify the lessee by first class mail within ten (10) days from receipt of their owner notification letter from the manufacturer; both for the initial notification and all subsequent notifications.
Reimbursement:
If you had this repair performed before you received this letter, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of the problem associated with this recall. For more information contact Spartan RV Chassis at 1-800-543-4277.

Chronology :
On September 13, 2021, Product Safety and Compliance for Shyft was made aware of 3 customer complaints of the rear drive axle shifting shifting rearward on completed motorhomes. An investigation was initiated. On September 16, 2021, a fourth complaint was received involving shifting of the rear drive axle rearward. It was determined the trailing arm fasteners on one side of the vehicle were broken. Any remaining parts of the fasteners were asked to be returned. A request was made for maintenance records for the vehicles but as of the date of this filing, have not been received. In working with the Quality team, it was determined the process for torqueing the fasteners was not being followed and on September 24, 2021, a Stop Ship was issued. Torque was verified on all chassis and fasteners were marked with Dykem paint on the nut side of the fastener. On October 1, 2021, a customer complaint was sent to Product Safety and Compliance involving the shifting of the rear drive axle to one side of the vehicle was received. All fasteners appeared to be intact but were not marked as torqued. A suspect population of vehicles was confirmed on October 4, 2021 and on this day, Shyft determined that a safety related defect could exist in those vehicles.
