Summary

Deking Corporation Co. Ltd. (Deking) has submitted a Defect Information Report based upon recall determinations made by Grand Design RVeBay logo (recall 21V-393), JaycoeBay logo (recall 21V-425), KZRV (recall 21V-426), KeystoneeBay logo (recall 21V-427), HeartlandeBay logo Recreational Vehicles (recall 21V-428), Highland Ridge RVeBay logo (recall 21V-430), Starcraft RVeBay logo (recall 21V-431), KZRV (recall 21V-670), AirstreameBay logo (recall 21V-671), JaycoeBay logo (recall 21V-685), Highland Ridge RVeBay logo (recall 21V-686), Starcraft RVeBay logo (21V-687), and KeystoneeBay logo RV (21V-708). Winntec and WIC Model 6020 LP regulators produced between January 1, 2017 and December 31, 2019 may fail, causing excessive gas output pressure.

 

Remedy

Affected vehicle manufacturers will determine the appropriate remedy for their vehicles. Vehicle owners may contact the respective vehicle manufacturers customer service phone numbers listed in each vehicle manufacturer recall.

Chronology :

May 26, 2021: Grand Design submitted a Part 573 defect information report identifying a safety defect in certain of its RVs equipped with Model 6020 regulators. See Recall 21V-393.

June 4, 2011: Several affiliated RV manufacturers submitted similar defect information reports in which they identified a safety defect in certain of their RVs equipped with Model 6020 regulators. See, e.g., Recall No. 21V-425.

June 8, 2021: Deking representatives met virtually with NHTSA officials to discuss issues related to the pending RV recalls.

June 23 and early July 2021: At Deking’s request, the two companies that import the Model 6020 regulators for use as original equipment in RVs provided lists of their OEM customers to ODI.

July 2 and July 14, 2021: Deking submitted engineering reports to NHTSA that explained and supported the company’s views regarding the causes of the RV thermal events.

July 30, 2021: Deking representatives met virtually with NHTSA officials to discuss the results of Deking’s investigations and analyses of relevant issues and its inspections of several RVs that had experienced a thermal event.

July and August 2021: Deking representatives submitted additional information to ODI regarding the inspections of RVs that Deking had conducted.

August 4, 2021: A Deking representative and NHTSA staff discussed NHTSA’s interpretation of 49 CFR 573.3(f) and the agency’s request that the company provide a report under that section.

August 13, 2021: Although Deking has not identified a safety defect in the Model 6020 regulators, it informed NHTSA staff that it would submit a Part 573 report as requested.
