Electrical Relay May Overheat and Cause Fire
An overheated electrical relay increases the risk of a fire.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V268
Manufacturer Kibbi, LLC
Components ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Potential Number of Units Affected 148
Summary
Kibbi, LLC (Kibbi) is recalling certain 2021 Renegade RV Vienna and Villagio motorhomes equipped with Dayton/Snyder electrical relays. A stranded wire used in the connector may cause the relay to overheat.
Remedy
Dealers will remove the electrical relay and reconnect wiring as necessary. Dealers will also add a warning label by the Firefly touch screen that states, “Don’t use Range, Microwave or Air Conditioning unit unless the coach is powered by shore or Generator.” All repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on April 29, 2022. Owners may contact Kibbi’s customer service at 1-574-966-0196.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Renegade RV has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2021 Vienna/Villagio vehicles. Upon receipt of this notice contact your local service center to schedule an appointment to have the remedy performed. Renegade RV will execute this remedy (0.5 labor hours allotted for relay only). The service center is to order the part kit (# 4520068) that Renegade RV will supply at NO CHARGE and complete the repair for free.
What is the issue: Possibility for a fire at the 110 VAC load center due to heat from the Dayton/Snyder Electric relay.
What is the safety risk: The possibility of the 110 VAC load center and or the DAYTON/Snyder Electric relay distorting, melting and up to causing a fire.
Identify any warning which can precede or occur: Possibility of smell and/or smoke.
What is the cause: Stranded wire used in a compression style connector causing heat within the relay.
What is the Remedy: At no cost to the customer, Renegade will remove jumper wire from Dayton/Snyder Electric relay to main breaker. Move S.J. wire from Dayton/Snyder Electric relay to main breaker. Remove the Dayton/Snyder Electric relay, remove 12 VDC trigger wires from the 110 VAC load center with the relay, cap off 12 VDC wires, using bell connectors, and secure behind load center with zip tie. Add decal by Firefly touch screen indicating “Don’t use Range, Microwave or Air Conditioning unit unless coach is powered by shore or Generator” The Dayton/Snyder Electric relay does not allow for the range, microwave, or A/C to operate off the inverter by sensing shore/generator power through the transfer switch.
Removal of the relay will allow the range, microwave, and A/C to operate on the inverter. Customer to be made aware of load management with this change.
If you have incurred expense to remedy this issue prior to the date of this notice, you may have the opportunity to obtain reimbursement for that expense. For details, contact us at the number or email address provided.
