Summary
Suburban Manufacturing Co (Suburban Manufacturing) is recalling certain SDS2 2-Burner Drop-in Cooktops with part number 3032AST. The internal aluminum burner tubes that connect to the gas valves may fracture and cause a gas leak, due to incorrect cooktop installation into the recreational vehicles.
Remedy
Suburban Manufacturing will provide a replacement SDS2 cooktop, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 27, 2022. Owners may contact Suburban Manufacturing customer service at 1-866-645-0658.

This Customer Notification is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the United States National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
REASON FOR THIS RECALL
Suburban Manufacturing has decided that defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in SDS2 – 2 Burner cooktops that were installed on Escape RV travel trailers. The internal aluminum burner tubes connecting the gas valves to the cook top burners can fracture from excessive vibration or shock experienced through travel in an Escape RV. The burner tube could crack resulting a leak of propane when the top burner gas valve is opened to use the appliance. If ignited the propane could result in a fire and/or explosion which could result in personal injury.
WHAT WE WILL DO
Suburban will provide a replacement SDS2 cooktop to Escape RV owners at no cost. With proper documentation, Suburban will reimburse owners for the retail cost of an SDS2 cooktop if it was replaced prior to the issuing of this recall.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
You or your dealer must contact Suburban’s Customer Service department at 423-775-2131 ext 7101 or via email at [email protected]. Suburban will coordinate with you about the replacement cooktops.

09/25/2020 – Suburban opens and investigation on the SDS2 cooktop.
11/11/2020 – Lab Analysis completed on failed cooktop burner tubes indicating hardening.
11/2020 – 8/2021 – Suburban communicates with Escape RV regarding the issue.
08/19/2021 – Suburban requests information on the usage of the SDS2 and the vehicle information the cooktops are installed in.
09/2021 – Information and Data is exchanged between Escape RV and Suburban.
10/1/2021 – Issue was forwarded to THOR Corporate for review.
10/7/2021 – THOR review complete issue determined to be isolated to Escape RV. No further actions taken due to lack of cooperation by Escape RV.
2/18/2022 – NHTSA ODI office notifies Suburban of 2 VOQs associated with the SDS2 cooktop recently filed.
3/4/2022 – Suburban forwards VOQs to THOR VSRC office for review. THOR requests any warranty claims data from Forest River, Winnebago, and Airstream. Over the next two weeks all three confirmed no issues with the SDS2 Cooktop.
3/25/2022 – THOR VSRC responds to NHTSA inquiry from 2/18/2022.
4/15/2022 – Suburban attempts to reestablish communication with Escape regarding the issue.
4/23/2022 – Escape RV responds requesting more time in their review of the issue.
4/25/2022 – Suburban decides to initiate an equipment safety recall for the SDS2 cooktops used in Escape RVs.
6/3/2022 – Escape RV notified Suburban the quantity was raised from 640 to 880.
6/17/2022 – After confirmation of the raised quantity, the number of potentially involved units was raised to 880.

SDS2 Cooktop.
3/25/2022 – THOR VSRC responds to NHTSA inquiry from 2/18/2022.
4/15/2022 – Suburban attempts to reestablish communication with Escape regarding the issue.
4/23/2022 – Escape RV responds requesting more time in their review of the issue.

Description of Remedy Program : Suburban will provide a replacement SDS2 cooktop to Escape RV owner’s.
With proper documentation, Suburban will reimburse owners for the
retail cost of an SDS2 cooktop if it was replaced prior to the issuing of this
recall.
How Remedy Component Differs
from Recalled Component :
The remedied component contains Stainless Steel burner tubes. The
product number has also changed to 3332AST.

was Corrected in Production :
Escape RV discontinued the use of the SDS2 cooktop in production. No
production change was made by Suburban of the SDS2 cooktop.

Description of the Defect : The internal aluminum burner tubes connecting the gas valves to the cook top
burners can fracture from excessive vibration or shock experienced through
travel in an Escape RV.

gas valve is opened to use the appliance. If ignited the propane could result in
a fire and/or explosion which could result in personal injury.

tubes likely caused by repeated impact or excessive vibration.
