Dometic Corporation has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, in certain Bowlus travel trailers equipped with a PI8022 series cooktop. Our records indicate that the cooktop installed in your Bowlus is affected by the recall. The serial number of the cooktop is xxxxxxxx. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience, and Dometic Corporation will provide a full replacement cooktop as the remedy for this recall. The cooktop kit will include instructions, a replacement unit, a mandatory recall response card (to be filled out at the time of the repair), and specific requirements that an authorized technician must install the replacement cooktop free of charge. Visually and performance-wise, the replacement unit will be virtually the same as your existing cooktop. The Problem The burner control valve, mated directly to the control knob via the valve stem, may leak gas. This gas will leak directly into the recessed portion of the cooktop, where the knobs and ignitor are located, and may be ignited by the active burner(s), which can cause a fire. The ignition will result in a small pilot flame directly at the control knob. What Dometic Corporation Will do: Dometic Corporation is aggressively approaching all OEM’s, Dealers, Retailers, and End Users with certified letters (for which they must sign), defining the product, models, population, and direction on action to be taken. The remedy will consist of 1) instructions to locate the cooktop serial number 2) Recall Response Card to be filled out and returned to receive the replacement unit. Again, Dometic Corporation is supplying this recall remedy at no charge. The repair will will take approximately one hour. What You Need to Do: Your options for having the cooktop replaced are as follows: 1) You may schedule a service appointment with us at our facility in Oxnard, CA, and we will replace the cooktop free of charge. The replacement will take approximately one hour. If this is your preferred path, please let us know which days work best for you for an appointment. We would need your Bowlus to stay with us for up to two business days, and our Service Department is open Monday – Friday from 8:30am – 4:00pm. 2) We can assist in finding a Dometic-approved RV Technician in your area who is able to complete the replacement – also at no charge to you. These RV cooktops were manufactured between late 2020 and June 2021. The potentially affected cooktops have the model designations set forth below. The total population of these products with the potential safety-related defect pertaining to the burner control valves is no more than 2 Bowlus travel trailers. There have been no reported incidents of gas leaks, injury or death involving these products in the United States. There were 7 reported incidents in Europe involving different cooktops with the same burner control valve, however, these claims did not result in injuries. (A Dometic Group Affiliate in Europe has initiated a recall in Europe of cooking products that contain this same burner control valve.) The detailed description of the potential safety-related defect is associated with the burner control valve where the valve stem is located directly behind the cooking knob of the cooktops. The burner control valve may have incurred abrasions, internally or externally, on the mating metal sealing surfaces of the burner control valve that may have led to leaks as noted in different European models, and could possibly lead to similar leak incidents in a limited number of US cooktop models as noted above. The affected serial numbers were provided by Dometic. Bowlus Road Chief LLC traced all serial numbers of affected cooktop in our records to specific VINs. There are two affected VINs. Bowlus Road Chief initiated an internal safety escalation process on May 11, 2022 and is filing the official Defect Notification to NHTSA in accordance with CFR 49, Subtitle B, Chapter V, Part 573, Clause 573.6. Description of Remedy : Page3 Description of Remedy Program : As per Dometic: Remedy will be made by replacement/ exchange with newer cooktops that are not within the recall population. Remedy replacement will be completed at no cost to the end user. The user will indicate that they have an affected cooktop and supply the serial number information to Dometic Corporation. The remedy replacement unit will be sent with instructions to complete the installation and functional verification at no cost to the end user by a qualified RV technician. Reimbursement to the qualified RV technician will be provided once Dometic Corporation receives the recall response card and recalled unit documenting that the replacement has been made. How Remedy Component Differs As per Dometic: The replacement/exchange unit will have a completely from Recalled Component: different serial number outside of the recall population that will not have the defective burner control valve. The units will be visually the same to the end user. Identify How /When Recall Condition As per Dometic: Burner control valves from the supplier are no longer in was Corrected in Production : use at the manufacturing site. The supplier only provided a limited production run because of production volume challenges. The factory corrective action was put in place on or about the time of the potential defect notification to NHTSA.
