Step Treads Inadequately Secured to Step Brackets

The step treads may detach from the step bracket, increasing the risk of injury.

Summary

Forest River, Inc. (Forest River) is recalling certain 2022 Prime Time Crusader and Sanibel fifth wheel travel trailers. The step treads are inadequately secured to the step brackets.

 

Remedy

Dealers will install an elevator bolt to properly secure tread to the steps, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 5, 2022. Owners may contact Forest River customer service at 1-574-862-1025. Forest River’s number for this recall is 49-1523.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements Motor Vehicle Safety Act. This notice is also sent in accordance with the requirements of the United States’ National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Forest River has decided that a defect, which relates to the motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2022 Prime Time Manufacturing – Crusader fifth-wheel travel trailer recreational vehicles and 2022 Prime Time Manufacturing – Sanibel fifth-wheel travel trailer recreational vehicles. This is to inform you that your vehicle may contain a defect that could affect the safety of a person.

 

WHAT IS THE DEFECT/NONCOMPLIANCE?

The step treads leading to the upper deck of the fifth-wheel are inadequately secured to the step brackets.

 

EVALUATION OF THE RISK TO THE VEHICLE AND OPERATOR(S) RELATED TO THE RECALL.

The step tread(s) may detach from the step bracket, which may cause personal injury.

 

WHAT IS FOREST RIVER AND OUR DEALERSHIPS GOING TO DO?

Forest River is notifying dealerships of the recall. You may have the recall corrected at any Forest River dealership or service center to secure the step treds properly. It is preferable if you have your selling dealership perform the remedy. Forest River completely covers your cost for the remedy; you will not receive any bill of sale for anything covered under the above recall number.

 

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

Please contact your dealer immediately and request a service appointment to schedule the free remedy. The vehicle Owner is responsible for arranging to have the work completed. Please state you have been notified by Forest River of having a recall in process for your vehicle and provide the recall number for the dealership. It is also helpful to the dealership to have a copy of this letter when you take your vehicle in for the recall remedy.

HOW LONG WILL THE REMEDY PROCESS TAKE?

The estimated time of repair is .30 hours. However, the dealership may need to keep your vehicle or schedule an appointment with you for a later date to fit into their regular service schedule.

 

WHAT IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY PAID FOR REPAIRS TO YOUR VEHICLE FOR THIS PARTICULAR CONDITION?

If you have already paid for a repair that is within the scope of this defect under recall, you still need to have this recall inspected and/or performed to ensure the correct parts and procedures were utilized.

Additionally, you may be eligible for a refund of previously paid repairs. Refunds will only be provided for within the scope of this defect under recall.

Disconnect the vehicles’ battery Positive and Negative, disconnect any House battery(s) Positive and Negative, if equipped with a generator ensure it is off and lastly, ensure the vehicle is disconnected from shore power. Block any tires/wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Failure to do so may result in electrocution, fire or other personal injury, property damage and/or death.

PARTS KIT (ORDER FROM PRIME TIME):
4 – ¼”-20 X 1 ½” ELEVATOR BOLT
4 – ¼” FLAT WASHER
4 – ¼” NYLON LOCK NUT

TOOLS NEEDED:
– DRILL
– ¼” DRILL BIT
– 7/16” SOCKET
– DEAD BLOW HAMMER

STEP 1: REMOVE THE TWO REAR SCREWS IN EACH STEP TREAD;

• LEAVE THE FRONT SCREWS IN PLACE AS THESE WILL NOT BE REMOVED OR REPLACED;

 

STEP 2: RUN A LONGER SCREW UP THROUGH EXISTING HOLE TO PENETRATE THE TOP OF THE STEP TREAD;

• DOING THIS WILL MARK THE TREAD FOR DRILLING;
• SEE FIGURE 1

 

STEP 3: DRILL THE STEP TREAD USING THE ¼” BIT. DRILL THROUGH BOTH THE TREAD AND STEP BRACKET;

• SEE FIGURE 2

 

STEP 4: INSERT THE ¼”-20 X 1 ½” ELEVATOR BOLT IN BOTH HOLES DRILLED IN THE STEP TREADS;

• SEE FIGURE 3

STEP 5: HIT TOP OF ELEVATOR BOLT WITH THE DEAD BLOW HAMMER TO SEAT INTO STEP TREAD;

• SEE FIGURE 4

 

STEP 6: PUT A ¼” FLAT WASHER ON THE ELEVATOR BOLT;

 

STEP 7: INSTALL THE ¼”” NYLON LOCK NUT USING A 7/16” SOCKET;

• SEE FIGURE 5

 

STEP 8: USE 7/16” SOCKET TO TIGHTEN NUT;

• PUTTING PRESSURE ON THE TOP OF ELEVATOR BOLT;
• DRAW THE ELEVATOR BOLT HEAD FLUSH TO THE TOP OF THE STEP TREAD;
• THIS WILL PREVENT THE ELEVATOR BOLT FROM SPINNING;
• SEE FIGURE 6 FOR FINISHED LOOK

 

STEP 9: CLEAN AND VACUUM;

 

STEP 10: CLAIM REPAIR CODE.

Chronology :

On June 8, 2022, Forest River’s Office of Corporate Compliance (“OCC”) was notified by the Prime Time – Crusader and Sanibel manufacturing plant that they received a dealer complaint on June 7, 2022, of the step treads leading to the “up stairs” portion of the fifth-wheel that began detaching from the step support brackets.

OCC began researching this concern the same day. Working together and rapidly, Corporate Codes & Standards, the manufacturing plant and OCC identified the concern. Due to the nature of the failure, it was decided to call an emergency Corporate Safety Committee meeting for the same day.

On the same day, June 8, 2022, the Corporate Safety Committee voted to recall the vehicles and remedy the concern.
