Basis for Determination of the Recall Population: All specific limited production vehicles with this design are included. Number potentially involved: 17 Estimated percentage of involved with defect: 100% Defect / Noncompliance Description For this Defect/Noncompliance: Describe the defect or noncompliance: FMVSS 121 requires the retention of ABS fault codes in the system when the vehicle is keyed off and then back on again. If these limited production vehicles are keyed off for more than 5 seconds, the ABS fault codes will not be retained. Describe the safety risk: Retention of ABS fault codes in the system is required for proper diagnosis of any issues with the system and with driver notification of required vehicle maintenance. Driving the vehicle without proper maintenance can increase the risk of a crash. Identify any warning which can precede or occur: The ABS light would be illuminated before the key off cycle occurs. If applicable, identify the manufacture of the defective or noncompliant component.: This is not applicable because there is not a defective part involved. The defective software, supplied by the manufacturer DTNA, not the hardware component created the non-compliance. Involved Components Component Name: Brake Electronic Control Unit Component Description: Brake Controller Component Part Number: WAB884 109 215 0 Chronology of Defect / Noncompliance Determination Provide the chronology of events leading up to the defect decision or test data for the noncompliance decision: DTNA discovered that an ABS fault code was not storing during a routine test procedure on June 2, 2022. DTNA promptly began an investigation into the issue, within which investigation it was confirmed to the best of DTNA’s knowledge that the issue exists on 17 specific customer vehicles. On June 22, 2022, DTNA determined that a non-compliance existed and decided to conduct a voluntary non-compliance recall campaign for these limited production vehicles. The investigation found no evidence of accident or injury as a result of the issue. Identify the Remedy Describe the defect/noncompliance remedy program, including the manufacture’s plan for reimbursement. The repair strategy is still being determined and is therefore not available at this time. Repairs will be performed by Daimler Truck North America authorized service facilities. Daimler Truck North America shall be offering a refund for owner-paid repairs covered by this recall if the repair was performed prior to the date indicated in the reimbursement plan, which will be posted with owner’s notification letter. Daimler Truck North America LLC August 2022 FL943 Interim Recall Notice NHTSA #22V-456 IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL See enclosed VIN list Subject: CASCADIA ABS FAULT RETENTION This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Daimler Truck North America LLC (DTNA), on behalf of its Freightliner Trucks Division, has decided that certain 2022 Freightliner Cascadia vehicles manufactured October 28, 2021, through December 17, 2021, fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 121, “Air Brake Systems.” On certain limited production vehicles when keyed off for more than 5 seconds, the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) fault codes will not be retained, which can impair the ABS diagnostic features and warning light. An ABS system that does not store fault codes may fail to warn the driver of an issue, or prevent proper repair. Operating a vehicle that may fail to warn the driver of an issue, or prevent proper repair can increase the risk of a crash. This is the first of two notices you will receive regarding this subject. This letter is to inform you of an upcoming Recall to correct the issue noted above. Daimler Trucks is currently working on a solution. There is no action for you to take at this time. The second notice will inform you when the free, final remedy is available. When you receive the second notice, please contact your authorized Daimler Trucks North America dealer to schedule the Recall for your vehicle.
