Incorrect Axle Spindle Nuts Installed – 2023 Great Dane Champion Dry Van Trailers

Great Dane will provide instructions to owners to install a one-piece spindle nut, and if necessary, replace the bearings and the seal, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on August 10, 2022. Owners may contact Great Dane’s customer service at 1-877-369-3493.

Great Dane LLC has determined that certain model year 2023 Great Dane Champion dry van trailers produced in the Brazil, Indiana manufacturing facility may have been produced with the incorrect type axle spindle nuts. Trailers equipped with the incorrect type axle spindle nuts may not have had the bearing end play set correctly. This could lead to bearing failure and potentially a wheel off incident which could lead to a loss of control to the subject trailer, and/or a road hazard to other vehicles, increasing the chances of a crash or injury. Preceding warning signs may include, leaking hub-caps, leaking wheel seals, discolored hub paint, and high bearing end play. It is important to note that no accidents or injuries have been reported from the field. Great Dane will provide parts and pay to replace the bearings, seal, grease and install the proper one piece nut. Repair time should be approximately 4 hours. If you had this repair performed before you received this letter, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of the problem associated with this recall. The supervisor put together the build sheet correctly off of the shop order. One shift read the build sheet and put the correct 1 piece nuts on. The other shift did not, and installed the incorrect 2 piece nuts. Technicians had not been trained to properly install the 2 piece nut, since it was not supposed to be used on this order, and relied on inappropriate training provided for a previous order. This lead to the bearings being preloaded, which caused a bearing failure, and wheel loss in the field. A total of 9 Champion Dry Van trailers may be affected. All other units were either built with the correct 1 piece nut, or were corrected before leaving the manufacturing facility.
