Summary
Forest River, Inc. (Forest River) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Cargo Mate Cargo Trailers and Continental Cargo Trailers. The safety chains do not meet the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and could potentially break.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the safety chains, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 18, 2022. Owners may contact Forest River customer service at 1-254-420-0171. Forest River’s number for this recall is 700-1530.

STEP 1: LOCATE THE SAFETY CHAIN(S) ON THE ROAD SIDE AND CURB SIDE OF THE DRAW BARS;
STEP 2: TAKE A PHOTO OF HOW THE LOOP IS WELDED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE DRAW BARS;
STEP 3: USING A GRINDER, CUT OFF THE LOOP THAT IS WELDED TO THE DRAW BARS ON EACH SIDE (ROAD SIDE AND CURB SIDE);
NOTE: DO NOT CUT INTO THE DRAW BAR TUBE! THIS WILL PRESENT A STRUCTURAL ISSUE AND WILL NOT BE COVERED BY THE RECALL.
STEP 4: GRIND OFF EXCESS WELD FROM THE DRAW BAR AND SMOOTH OUT;
STEP 5: GRIND OFF PAINT FROM THE DRAW BAR IN THE SAME AREA WHERE THE LOOPS HAD BEEN WELDED;
STEP 6: FROM THE REMEDY KIT, ENSURE THE LOOP THAT WILL BE WELDED TO THE CURB SIDE DRAW BAR IS LOOPED THROUGH THE LAST LINK IN THE OF THE 11,700 LBS. RATED SAFETY CHAIN;
STEP 7: FROM THE REMEDY KIT, ENSURE THE LOOP THAT WILL BE WELDED TO THE ROAD SIDE DRAW BAR IS LOOPED THROUGH THE LAST LINK IN THE OF THE 11,700 LBS. RATED SAFETY CHAIN;
STEP 8: WELD THE LOOPS TO THE DRAW BARS WHERE THE PREVIOUS LOOPS HAD BEEN LOCATED. ENSURE TO REFERENCE THE PHOTO YOU TOOK IN STEP 2 TO ENSURE THE LOOP IS WELDED CORRECTLY;
STEP 9: ALLOW TO COOL, THEN APPLY BLACK SPRAY PAINT TO COVER AND PROTECT THE WELDS AND DRAW BARS WHERE THE PAINT HAD BEEN REMOVED;
STEP 10: CLAIM THE REPAIR CODE.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements Motor Vehicle Safety Act. This notice is also sent in accordance with the requirements of the United States’ National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Forest River has decided that a defect, which relates to the motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2021 – 2022 Cargo Mate and Continental Cargo trailers. This is to inform you that your vehicle may contain a defect that could affect the safety of a person.
WHAT IS THE DEFECT/NONCOMPLIANCE?
The safety chains do not meet the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and could potentially break
EVALUATION OF THE RISK TO THE VEHICLE AND OPERATOR(S) RELATED TO THE RECALL.
If the unit was to detach from the hitch the safety chains may not be sufficient to hold the unit increasing the risk of a crash.
WHAT IS FOREST RIVER AND OUR DEALERSHIPS GOING TO DO?
Forest River is notifying dealerships of the recall. You may have the recall corrected at any Forest River dealership. Forest River will provide all parts and labor free of charge to Consumers and Dealers. An authorized Forest River Dealer or Service Center will need to replace the under rated safety chains with properly rated safety chains for the GVWR of the vehicle. However, it is preferable if you have your selling dealership perform the remedy. Forest River completely covers your cost for the remedy; you will not receive any bill of sale for anything covered under the above recall number.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
Please contact your dealer immediately and request a service appointment to schedule the free remedy. The vehicle Owner is responsible for arranging to have the work completed. Please state you have been notified by Forest River of having a recall in process for your vehicle and provide the recall number for the dealership. It is also helpful to the dealership to have a copy of this letter when you take your vehicle in for the recall remedy.

HOW LONG WILL THE REMEDY PROCESS TAKE?
The estimated time of repair is .50 hours. However, the dealership may need to keep your vehicle or schedule an appointment with you for a later date to fit into their regular service schedule.
WHAT IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY PAID FOR REPAIRS TO YOUR VEHICLE FOR THIS PARTICULAR CONDITION?
If you have already paid for a repair that is within the scope of this defect under recall, you still need to have this recall inspected and/or performed to ensure the correct parts and procedures were utilized.

On 6/27/2022, during a Corporate Quality Manager inspection of the plant it was discovered the safety chains were under rated for the GVWR of the vehicle. The safety chains on the vehicle are rated at 7600 lbs. and should be 11,700 lbs.

Description of the Cause : When the model was created it was built off of an existing model. Existing model only has a single axle, this model is the tandems version. An authorized Forest River Dealer or Service Center will need to replace the under rated safety chains with properly rated safety chains for the GVWR of the vehicle.
