Trailers Twist Lock Handle Can Loosen and Detach
A lock that detaches and falls can become a road hazard. In addition, this may cause a container being transported to become unsecured. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.

Summary
Cheetah Chassis Corporation (Cheetah) is recalling certain 2023 7400GNFF0, 7235SNFSX, and 8400GNFF0 trailers. The Tandemloc twist lock handles may separate from the trailer and fall to the ground.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and repair affected handles, and replace any lock assemblies that are missing, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed in July 2022. Owners may contact Cheetah’s customer service at 844-205-5525.

Chronology :
(a) In May 2022, Cheetah Chassis received a customer complaint about missing twist lock handles and heads on two trailers.
(b) In June 2022, Cheetah Chassis received another complaint of twist lock handles and heads missing from four trailers.
(c) On July 14, 2022, Cheetah Chassis was made aware of an incident where a twist lock component came loose and struck another vehicle on the highway.
(d) On July 14, 2022, Cheetah Chassis determined that a safety defect exists in trailers fitted with the Tandemloc twist locks.

The twist lock head can also come out of the lock body and fall to the ground. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If the handles and/or the twist lock head falls to the ground while the trailer is in transit, the parts can strike other vehicles, increasing the risk of an accident as well as serious injury or death to vehicle occupants. In addition, if the parts come loose while transporting a container, the container may no longer be secured to the trailer, increasing the risk of serious injury or death in the event of a crash. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-518 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 (c) On July 14, 2022, Cheetah Chassis was made aware of an incident where a twist lock component came loose and struck another vehicle on the highway. (d) On July 14, 2022, Cheetah Chassis determined that a safety defect exists in trailers fitted with the Tandemloc twist locks. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Cheetah Chassis will supply repair instructions for the inspection and welding of the twist lock handles to prevent them from coming loose. In the event the twist lock head has come loose and fallen out and is missing, it will be necessary to replace the entire twist lock assembly. The remedy plans are set forth in greater detail in the proposed customer notification letter provided to NHTSA at the same time this Safety Defect Report is submitted. Cheetah Chassis will notify all affected customers within 5 days of NHTSA’s approval of the proposed customer notification letter. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The twist lock handle will be welded to the twist lock head shaft (it is unwelded as received) or the entire twist lock assembly will be replaced. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : We acquired the Tandemloc twist locks because of supply shortages. We are no longer installing these locks.
